Goldikova well in for a chance to win the Breeders’ Cup Mile for the fourth time
The three time winner of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile on grass, 6-year-old bay mare, Goldikova, is back for more when she takes on another bunch of top European and American milers.
This is history in the making, as Goldikova prepares herself for yet another Breeders’ Cup Mile and her trainer Freddy Head is excited to get his runner to her Churchill Downs stall.
Daughter of Anabaa, out of Born Gold by Blushing Groom, Goldikova is sitting on another big effort, at least that is what his conditioner thinks, and he is amazed that she is doing so well for her return to the U.S.
There was some conversation regarding Goldikova that she has slowed down a bit at the age of six, but Freddy Head is confident that his champion mare can set the track ablaze, just like she used to do in her early years.
He expressed his happiness for Wertheimer and Frere owned mare, and further added that it is unbelievable that the mare is actually going for a fourth Breeders’ Cup.
At the age of 6, Goldikova has participated in 5 races over all, and the star mare hasn’t finished worse than second. With two wins, she has gone on to finish second best three times this year.
All of those losses were narrow, and in her last race she got defeated by a head's margin in the Group 1 Qatar Prix De La Foret at Longchamp on 2 October, 2011.
Dream Ahead was the one who would not let Goldikova overhaul him in the closing stages of the race ,as he ran on well under pressure and straightened out, which gave him all the momentum he needed to beat Goldikova.
Prior to the head defeat to Dream Ahead in France, Goldikova was deprived of a visit to the winner's circle by Immortal Verse, who like Dream Ahead made it agonizingly close for Goldikova, handing her defeat by a mere length.
In 2010, Goldikova was 6 wins out of 7 starts, with a single runner-up finish, including Breeders’ Cup win, and if everything goes well, Goldikova is in for a big chance again to sweep up the most important race of the year.
