  1. With the awful conditions, the fact they dropped the par by 2 shots and left the rough at nearly knee height ......+no Tiger ,I am not surprised that the scores were so high

  2. The scores shot at The Open were more realistic than some scores shot at other venues. I think some courses are far too easy, feeble attempts for rough, the Masters et al.

  3. Depends on the course you play. The Championship Course at Birkdale isn't the same one that you or I would play on.

I think it's good that for once the professionals are given a solid, stern test. We all KNOW that they can demolish an easy course. That's no test for them.

  4. Yes, it was due to the wind and the fact that is it a links (seaside) course which US golfers find difficult to play.

  5. It is rare but not when playing on a golf course in conditions like that.

Royal Birkdale also made the par 70 instead of 72 for the British Open. I think it was something about the members of Birkdale didn't want the pro's shooting loads under par.

It was nice to see the pros shoot over par though because it does show they are human.

I wasn't suprised about the US golfers struggling on a golf course like that because they aren't used to playing in conditions like that, but as for the people who were brought up on golf courses like that.....e.g monty

  6. Not for a major like that and those conditions.

  7. Well, not often in the British Open.  Usually, there are weather problems such as rain and high winds that make it especially difficult to play in.  Padraig Harrington played very well, and still shot over par.

  8. Not over several rounds, when it's blowing a gale, I reckon 5 or 6 over parr is brilliant.

  9. For a major championship, over par is not that rare. The master's this year was close to par, and the U.S. was one over I believe. Of course when Tiger went crazy at Augusta in 1997 and at Pebble Beach in 2000, he pretty much changed everything, since then the courses that are in the running for major championships have gotten longer, with thicker rough, and tighter fairways, except for probably the Open Championship courses (ie. Birkdale, Troon, St. Andrews), over par there is just because of the cool windy climate.

  10. Yes it is, but the playing conditions and the greens were extremely challenging.  The wind, rain in the early rounds, and the pin placement made the best of the pros look human.

  11. ya most games are under par, good game tho
