Golf - 4 Most Interesting Penalties/Disqualifications of the Season: Johnson, Dredge, Furyk, Inkster
Where there are rules, one will surely find some breach in the results; so is the case with golf. Here are the four most interesting penalties and disqualifications of the season:
Dustin Johnson
The player was all set for the top spot when he found out that a penalty of two shots was imposed on his scorecard and the result was a drop to the 5th spot. Dustin Johnson had a bogey posted on the scorecard but the American was comfortable that at least he had a playoff to set the scores even. So the 26-year-old entered the playoff of 3 holes in the presence of strong winds at the Whistling Straits where the final round of the 92nd USPGA had just wrapped up. However, an official came in front with a notice that the heap of leaves on which Johnson grounded his clubs was in real a sand bunker that was demarked because of constant footsteps of the players and the fans. The result was a penalty of 2 shots which meant that Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson were going alone in the Playoff.
Bradley Dredge
The next case of the penalty is of the 37-year old Englishman Bradley Dredge, who showed up late in the third round of the Czech Open that was taking place at Prosper Golf Resort. He was therefore given a penalty of 2 shots as he violated the rule which said that any player who is more than 5 minutes late is either disqualified or given a penalty of two shots. As a result of this penalty, Dredge was relegated to the 16th spot of the leader board.
The story behind Bradley's late coming was the player’s assumption that he was only 10 minutes late therefore he would easily sneak in but when this happened , Bradley Dredge was already 20 minutes late moreover he was noticed by an official standing there and there goes the later story.
Jim Furyk
The third player on this list is Jim Furyk: the player got disqualified recently for being late at the Pro-Am session of the Barclay tournament that took at the Ridgewood country club. His tee timing was 7:30, but he overslept and earned himself disqualification from the first half of the FedEx playoffs of the season.
According to the US tour, a player who does not adhere to the rules of coming on time in Pro-Am is disqualified from the event, but if there is some family emergency or an injury, then a relaxation can be given. As for the world number 6, his alarm did not go in the morning; therefore, he could not wake up and reach the venue on time.
Juli Inkster
The last on the list of four is Juli Inkster, a veteran who got disqualified at the 2nd edition of the Safeway Classic. The reason for her disqualification was that she was using a weighted training aid on her club, which meant that she broke rule number 14-3 according to which no gadget or manual help can be taken during the tournament that can support the player in lifting or swinging the club.
This concludes the list of the four most recent and interesting disqualifications and penalties. However, the embarrassing aspect of all this is that all four players were veterans, which means that by now they should have known the rules well.
