Golf; A look at the third round of Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship
The third round of the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship predicted a lot about the final round. Here is a quick recap of the round that took place on Saturday, 9th October, 2010 at TPC
Potomac.
The player who hails from Arizona (Mark O'Meara) took the lead of the clubhouse despite of amid weather conditions and smashed a 69 with the help of three birdies and two bogeys. Mark O'Meara, seemed extra careful
on the front nine, although the layout of both the halves was almost the same; there were six par-4s, two par-3s and one par-5 hole in both the areas. Even then, the scoring was comparatively better and faster in the back nine. O’ Meara finished the front
nine holes with one under-par, whereas, he carded par equal score in the back nine. His overall aggregate was one –under-par 69.
O’Meara was the only player in the field to record a score of under par. He posted 68 in the first two rounds followed by a 69. The graduate of Long Beach State College told the press, "I felt like I played pretty well, I was disappointed
a little bit in my finish, but overall I felt like I hit some good shots. Anytime you keep shooting under par on this golf course is pretty good."
The 53-year-old was chased by Loren Roberts who posted four birdies against two bogeys to draft a round of 68. The four-time major winner on the Champions Tour relentlessly closed in with gradual improvement in the overall score.
His scorecard showed an improvement of one stroke in each round.
Roberts told the press that his victory was dependent on the performance of his fellow competitor, Mark O’Meara. He said, “If I can get in with 67 or 66, I think that might be enough, depending on what Mark does....Mark's so solid
from tee to green, and this is a ball striker's course."
According to media reports, the credit of Robert’s resilient game was given to his fine putting. He made quite a number of putts in Saturday’s round. It seemed as if the best club in his bag was a putter which helped him to reach
the top of the leaderboard with such an ease.
Other front runners included Michael Allen and Russ Cochran; both the players finished with the score of 72 and 73 respectively. The lower scoring of the day was done by Chien-Sun Lu and Bobby Clampett; both the players carded
a score of 67 in 18 holes.
The group was followed by Japan's Joe Ozaki, who made four birdies and two bogeys to draft a round of 68. According to the experts, Ozaki could have chased a victory on the final day if he would not have missed a shot at the par-3,
17th hole. That was the easiest hole of the course and a good wedge game was required to deal with it. After the third round he was standing at the fifth spot with a score of 2 under.
The third day assembled with two players making a score of 67 and nine. As for the rest of the players, the first round leader, Tom Kites settled with a score of 73. Above him was the legendary golfer, Tom Watson; he wrapped the
round with a 72 which was quite good for a player who is 60 years of age. The worst score was portrayed by the United States Ryder Cup captain, Corey Pavin. He made a 75 with six bogeys and one birdie. Technically, these stats should have been opposite keeping
in mind that he was the one in command at Celtic Manor and he was the one giving guidance to the golfers such as Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson.
