Golf: Alvaro Quiros wins Dubai Desert Classic
Alvaro Quiros’ Hole-in-one helped him win the 2011 Omega Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament at the Emirates Golf Club on Sunday.
The Spaniard surprised the spectators with his pace. He opened the front nine with an eagle and birdied the following holes to break away from a tie with Anders Hansen. However, he encountered a bunker on the eighth hole which eventually
took his advantage away and put him back in the danger zone.
The five-time winner on the European Tour birdied the closing hole on the front to eradicate the loss and wrapped it with a score of 33.
After that, the Spaniard walked towards the par-3 11th hole with a three-quarter wedge in his hand. He smashed a 161-yard long shot, which plunged over the entire desert and fell right into the hole. Quiros was overwhelmed
with his achievement.
The runner-up of the Qatar Masters could not help smiling on his way to the green of the 11th hole. When asked to comment on his shot, he said, “It was the perfect shot. Once a year it happens.”
Quiros bogeyed the next hole, but soon picked up a point to counter it off. He attempted another birdie at the par-5 18th hole but the ball stopped five inches away from the pin and he had to settle for a par.
Meanwhile, Hansen who was 8-under-par at the start of the round, could not earn many points. He dropped two shots, which he countered off with a set of birdies. However, his eagle at the 13th hole helped him retain the second
spot alongside James Kingston.
Kingston was one player who picked up the pace in the final rounds. He was at par in the first 36 holes, but jumped folds with a 67 in the third and fourth rounds. He birdied the three opening holes of the front and birdied three more
at the back. However, he missed the birdie putt at the 18th hole when the 22-footer stopped one metre away from the hole.
The desert swing has wrapped up with the conclusion of the Dubai Desert Classic and it proved a great challenge for the top golfers of the world.
