Golf: Bubba Watson wins the Farmers Insurance Open
Bubba Watson smashed a round of 67 on Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Club to mark the 2011 season opening event with a victory.
The final round of the Farmers Insurance Open kicked off in misty conditions at the South course, which is famous for being the most difficult one on Torrey Pines. Despite the testing conditions, Watson managed a score of five-under-par with the help of
six birdies against one bogey.
The player walked home with 500 FedEx points and a prize money of over $1 million.
One stroke below stood Phil Mickelson. The American failed to keep himself vaulted at the top-most spot and finished as the runner-up after bogeying three holes on the final day. Despite the loss, the veteran managed to carve in six birdies.
Dustin Johnson and Jhonattan Vegas smashed an aggregate score of 13-under-par to share the third spot of the leaderboard. Out of the duo, Johnson did a commendable job by picking four points on the front and two on the back nine of the par-72 course. The
veteran relished a clean scorecard with no flaws and managed to finish in the top of the birdie stats.
Unlike him, the player from Venezuela finished second in Green Hits in Regulation stats. Vegas opened the fourth round with a beautiful 9-foot long birdie and within a gap of a green, carved another. He drew three points on the front after encountering a
sand trap at the par-4 fifth. However, on the back, the winner of Bob Hope Classic sandwiched a bogey in three birdies and wrapped the tournament with a score of 68.
The only flaw in his game was the driving accuracy, which averaged at 41.1 per cent by the end of the tournament.
Three players were tied at the sixth place after attaining a score of 10-under. The group included Nick Watney who compiled the lowest score of the day. The American teed off from the back and managed five back-to-back birdies on the first five holes.
The crowd applauded the powerful strokes of Watney, who fired another set of birdies at the 16th hole and capped the four-day series with a score of 10-under.
