It is time that green fees become subject to inflation. Burley City Council announced in its annual session that a hike was expected in the green fees of Burley’s golf course.
The golf course, which is the situated in the heart of Hampshire, is the centre of sports activities in the area. The maintenance of the club bears a high cost, thereby, the officials decided to reduce the financial burden on the county funds. They called
a meeting in late hours before Christmas and invited members to draft a proposal for fee structure.
Suggestions were poured by the members and Mike Williams who presented the idea of increasing the rates. Williams suggested change in fees charged at charity functions and it was accepted for final consideration. The notion received lots of criticism, specifically
from Councilman Vaughn Egan. He rejected the notion presented by Williams and said that the raise would have a negative impact on the young golfers, as it would deprive them from practice. Although Egan’s stance was valid, yet it was denied.
Another Councilman, second the notion of Egan. Casey Andersen said that raising funds for the club was a crucial issue, but that did not confer the idea of making the rules stricter. Anderson added, “Through the years, the City Council has spent a lot of
time setting harsh rules for the golf pro and dictating what he can do who attended the golf workshop. We keep tightening the rope and he has less and less decision-making on his part.”
The second meeting of the council will take place on 2 January and the final hearing will be held on 18 January at 7 pm. All the members are expected to present the final proposal, but it will be the end session, which will decide whether the green fees
should be raised by 5% or not.
The hike in green fees can cause problems for the young golfers, but again golf is a game of elites. The ones who can afford it are allowed to enjoy it. Will the green fees rise or the county officials will think of something else? To find out more, log
