Golf Chitchat: Ryder Cup 2010- Americans are wearing the worst outfit ever
From its cheerleading jokes to its co-ordinated dress code, the customs and values of the Ryder Cup are very much its own.
The Ryder Cup is more than a golf event. It is the ground of social networking, where elites come to finalize their deals. Apart from that, it is a pageant where different players represent brands and the one that receives the most compliments is the most
preferred brand in the next tournament.
Although, America is the second fashion house after France but her golfers have a weird fashion sense, which at times becomes the reason behind it getting mocked. This strange behaviour has been brought back to Wales on Monday, when the Eagles landed the
Cardiff airport in Beige coats, blue shirts and black trousers. This was the most bizarre outfit choice for the Ryder Cup. The U.S. Ryder Cup team sent the fashion analysts of United States and United Kingdom into a shock when they arrived at Cardiff airport
dressed in outfits resembling something out of a 1970s sitcom.
The dress-code was meant to give an impression of university professors, but seems like a slight change turned the whole idea upside down. The worst, there was a flare in the bottom of the pants! The whole set up seemed like the professors were making their
way to a disco. Bell bottoms are so not the thing for the Ryder Cup. According to a US golf fashion writer,”What’s the disco deal with those flared bottoms? It’s very John Travolta. I don’t think he had anything to do with selecting the team’s outfits
but he could have worn them.”
As for the designer of the famous outfits, it was none other than the wife of U.S. captain Corey Pavin, who was trying to give a ‘retro-inspired, vintage look’. The whole idea was to give a subtle look to the players who were expected to play in overcast
weather conditions.
Among criticism there is still agreement that the old school look is an improvement on what the team has been seen wearing at previous events. When arriving at Dublin in 2006, the team was seen in a design that consisted of tweed jackets, trousers and Fair
Isle tops, all in shades of brown. Digging deeper into the past, in 1999, the team t-shirts were maroon with big blocks and the result was that Tiger Wood burnt his after the tournament.
The U.S. team is not the only one which makes bizarre fashion statement. Taking the example of the European striker, Colin Montgomerie, the guy has also been mocked several times for his navy blue blazer, grey tie and grey trousers. He gives an impression
of an insurance sales man.
As for the rest of the outfits, the Saturday theme revolves around purple cardigan, pink dress shirt, and dark striped flannel trousers. The only thing missing is a cigar and a grey stripped necktie, rest they will present a view of 1930s. However, the Sunday
outfit is comparatively better with black cardigans, black pants and three colour belt with a red stripes. Tiger will look outclass in this red and black combination but in the case of Rickie Fowler, he will be turned into a complete goof. Brown spiked hairs
and red striped shirt might pull the morale of the player down to the ground.
At the end of the day, clothes are meant to cover and provide protection; therefore, they don’t play a strong role in winning or losing. As when the Americans won in Valhalla in 2008, they were dressed up in the worst outfit of the Ryder Cup history, despite
their morale was high in the sky and their eyes sparkled with confidence. Therefore, whether it’s golden or silver, the colour of the trophy is decided by the efforts of the team not by their fashion sense.
