Question:

Golf Club selection?

Well I currently play off 9 and am considering a new set of irons. I am considering getting a set from 2 - pw as I find long irons easy to hit. However, I also have a 5 wood which I want to keep. Would having a 5 wood and 2 iron in the same bag have any use? Also I currently do not use a 3 wood, due to seeing it as pointless - can anyone advice me on when a 3 wood would be useful? Cheers.

  1. Well depending on how far you hit the 5 wood you might not need a three wood, but generally it is used for a distance longer than 5 wood, not as long as your driver.  It is also used off the tee when driver is too much club (hit through dogleg into woods etc) or for better accuracy.  I too like the long irons, I  usually carry a 1 or 2 iron, and not the five wood, keeping a three wood in the bag.  You will have a hard time finding a new set with a 2 iron, most only go down to 3 iron and you have to customer order the two, some only go down to 4 iron and they want to sell you a hybrid instead of 2 and 3 irons.

  2. A 3 wood is useful if you're a big hitter and want to reach par 5s in two.  Also, a 3 wood comes in handy when there's a tricky dog leg and your driver would be too far but you still need a good amount of distance.

  3. i wish had a 2 iron and 5 wood then swap depending on wat course or weather eg. if its windy dry or links course then 2 iron if its calm and soft or parkland then 5 wood.

ive basicly been playing with out a 3 wood for bout year and got a new 1 recently and find myself hitting it 6-8 times a round but that may just b the course i play at (tight and short)

2 irons can ussually b ordered wen buying a new set but b prepared to spend an extra £40-50 u wont get asked if u want a 2 iron so make sure u ask

  4. Its not a problem to have both in your bag.  The 2 iron is great in the wind, better out of the rough, and better for punch shots.  The 5 wood is a little easier to hit and comes in handy when you want to land it softly.  I play a 3 wood and a hybrid and I like to hit the 3 wood off the tee on tight holes and shorter holes to get to my best distance.  I'm also hit the ball a long way and often hit my 3 wood into the longer par 5's.
