If you play golf for the exercise is it not better to walk.

Is there a very good reason?

  1. The problem is that most people don't play for the exercise. It's all about networking these days. It's all about designer outfits and talking money. Top executives don't walk. And neither do the wannabees. As in Yuppie-wannabees.

ADD: Sprinkly is right. There are elderly people or people with physical disabilities that play golf too and I understand their need for a golf cart, but at least 90% who use golf carts are able-bodied yuppies. Not talking about the elderly who also enjoy a round of golf, but are unable to walk that far.

  2. Aquirius......I think it is because they are bad golfers, like me. At a Mashee Course (9 holes and much shorter ranges) it takes me and my 2 incompetent friends at least 4 hours to play 9 holes) that is without a golf cart. We let every one play through but are walking up and down looking for our balls, losing balls etc. taking ages to get each ball on the green and into the hole. At a normal golf course, each tee off is so far away from each green that I have to squint to see the flag. I have never played 18 holes on a "big" golf course but have played 9 and the golf cart helped to get us quicker to the next hole, helping us to drive around and search for our balls. I think people do not use golf cars because they are lazy but because they are a bit incompetent like me........

  3. I am a keen golfer myself and prefer the walk. it is great exercise and I find the game just that little more enjoyable walking. There are guys who enjoy the game but just can nor walk and during club championships or competitions, a medical certificate must be produced when taking a cart. For myself, I love the walk and can not see it any different.

  4. I used to sell golf tours over there. Most of the golfers were able bodied and the cart was partly status symbol, partly time saver. Some of the tours only barely gave time enough to do the course if you used a cart before you had to run off to the next point of interest.

Among those who were not on a tight time schedule, it is often the game - the ball hitting - is more important than the walking.

There are probably as many reasons as there are golfers who use them. Age and mild to medium disabilities are also among the reasons for using them for some golf addicted folks.

Do not be too hard on the golfers who golf South Africa. They feed a lot of South Africans both directly and indirectly (and for a while, at least one Canadian :o). And they love to return and return and return to South Africa to golf.

  5. Some of the new golf estates insist that you use a cart.

and some courses have quite a distance from the green to the next tee,so a cart speeds up play.

I use my own cart so i can carry more stuff, cooler box etc.

and i also have headlights for the day night games, which is great fun.you play 9 holes in the late afternoon then have a braai and a few beers and then "try" to play the second nine.

But if you have an office job then maybe you should walk ,if thats the only exercise you get.

  6. I think its a status symbol.

  7. Some are too old, some are too lazy, some are too arrogant.

Golf is not a sport, it is a rich persons excuse....for activity.

  8. My father-in-law uses one because he is old and has bad knees from playing professional rugby (he has one titanium knee and is going to have the other replaced soon). The cart enables him to still play a round, which I think is great because he loves being outside and he enjoys himself at the club with all his friends.

ADD: Lark is right as well and I imagine you were probably referring to all the able-bodied wannabees instead of the golf club oldies. I remember B-Comm students (girls) organising golf outings and buying all the outfits for "networking purposes" (in second year!). Yuppies!
