Golf: Davis Love appointed 2012 US Ryder Cup team captain
US Professional Golfers Association has appointed Davis Love III as the Ryder Cup captain for its team for 2012, ending weeks of speculations over the move.
After European tour's announcement regarding the name of their captain, the Americans were anxiously waiting for their leader and on Thursday morning, PGA America gave the big news. They chose the member of six Ryder Cups and the winner of the 1997 PGA Championship
as the man to look up to.
The 46-year-old Love addressed a press conference inside the clubhouse of Medinah Country Club to confirm the news. The clubhouse was covered with snow, but the temperature inside was warm with all the love pouring for the captain.
The American thanked the American PGA for giving him the opportunity. Love has served the team as a vice-captain under the leadership of Corey Pavin and was in a cheerful mood at the presser.
He said, “I guess since the big secret is out, now I can tweet it. I'm thrilled. I'm thrilled to represent The PGA of America. Thrilled to represent all of the men and women PGA professionals. As we have said a lot of times, there's not a Tour player out
there that plays one Tour event or plays six Ryder Cups that doesn't have a PGA professional that led them to that position.”
However, at one occasion, Love became quite emotional when he mentioned his father’s name. His father, Davis Jr. was a recognised instructor in his era, but he died in a tragic plane crash in 1988 and could not see his son become a Ryder Cup captain.
Love acknowledged his father’s efforts for golf and said that he wanted to thank him for teaching him everything about the sport.
Moreover, he emphasised on his keenness to meet Jose Maria Olazabal at Medinah Country Club in 2012. Olazabal is the captain of the European squad and was nominated recently.
Love said, “José Maria and I go way back. We have competed against each other. I look forward to competing against him.”
The striker for the Unites States team has been chosen for the next Ryder Cup, which will take place on the American soil.
