Golf: Davis Love hints at playing in the Ryder Cup team
Davis Love III, the newly appointed captain for the 2012 Ryder Cup US team, might contribute as a player as well.
In a press conference held in the clubhouse of Medinah Golf Club on Thursday, Love said that he might compete as a player in the Ryder Cup.
For the ones who have no clue what the Ryder Cup is about, here is a gist. Ryder Cup is a team event, which takes place once in every two years. There are 12 players in each team and these players are chosen by the captain based on Official World Golf Rankings and FedEx points.
The description signifies that if Love wants to pick himself as a Ryder Cup player, then he will have to fulfil the prerequisite of contention.
He said in a statement that he was looking forward to playing in the 2012 Ryder Cup, but for that, he will try competing in golf tournaments.
The 46-year-old said, “I've given a lot of thought to that, because I'm never going to give up my goal of making Ryder Cups, as long as I feel like I'm competitive on the Tour. I went out to Hawaii last week thinking about making points on all of the lists that I need to move up on and trying to win golf tournaments. I think between José Maria and myself, if one of us gets hot with the putter, we might makeour own team.”
The veteran finished ninth in a tie recently in Hawaii after smashing a score of 60 odd in all four rounds of the Sony Open.
However, the captain is in no mood to take a risk as he does not want to compromise on the quality and wants the best 12-man team.
Explaining his stance, Love added, “But what I ultimately want is the 12 best players and if I'm one of the best eight come the PGA Championship in 2012, then I'm going to want to play, because I don't want to leave a guy off the team that might help us win, and if that's me, great. If not, you know, I certainly would have a tough time picking myself. That wouldn't look very good.”
Davis Love might prove handy as a player on the team, after all he is known as one of the legendary golfers for his 20 career wins on the Professional Golfers Association tour.
