Golf: FGCU golf coach Meghan Spero resigns from office
Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf coach Meghan Spero has resigned from her job to take up a position with Professional Golfers Association Magazine in Philadelphia.
The 31-year-old resumed her office in 2010 July after Brittany Bertilson, the former coach backed off from the contention.
The rumour was confirmed in a press conference on Thursday in which Florida Gulf Coast University athletic director Ken Kavanagh broke the news. Kavanagh said that Spero was offered a post in a magazine, which she accepted.
Spero is the fourth coach at FGUC, who resigned. Earlier, Brittany Bertilson gave up the post because of the compensation. She complained that the salary was not suitable for the job description. Prior to her resignation, Holly Vaughn resigned in 2007, owing
to a gender discrimination lawsuit. The lady accused the university for gender discrimination and settled for $3.4 million as compensation.
Like all former coaches, Spero too faced the issue regarding the salary. A coach is paid $25,000 per annum at FGCU along with health and social security benefits. However, prior to resignation, Spero discussed the issue with the management, but an unsatisfied
response made her leave.
Kavanagh commented on the issue and said, “We're not going to make apologies for who we are. We are in a growing (period) in some of our sports. As we continue to grow, we'll continue to increase opportunities for compensation.”
Spero nominated Georgia Price, the two-time News-Press Girls Golfer of the Year and Kristin Swindell as her replacement. However, the final decision of recruitment lies with the management.
Kavanagh further added that the University had pleasant time with Spero and she too was not happy about leaving, which is why she asked her new employee for extension in joining date. Kavanagh said, “She feels very bad. She did a real nice job in her one
semester with us. Our students are really bummed out she's not staying, because they enjoyed playing for her. She wanted to stay until the conclusion of FGCU's spring golf season, but her boss did not allow her.”
After Spero’s resignation, FGCU is left in a tight spot. The final championship is due on 5
February 2011 and the management has only one month left for hiring.
