Golf Feature: Golfers’ favourite colours
Colours have meanings and they represent gestures, but at times people view colours in a superstitious manner – that is they believe, for example, that a red shirt brings them victory and so on. Even in golf, players have their
favourite colours. Here are a few golfers and their favourite colours:
Tiger Woods - Red
Woods seems to be in love with red. Pick any shade of it and pick any tournament, you will see Tiger chasing the American dream wearing a mutation of the colour. The first time he appeared on TV at the age of four, he was dressed
in red. Though that was probably his mother’s doing, at the age of 35, no one is going to force him to wear the colour. Let’s dig into Tiger’s playing history and see how many interesting moments we can find with the colour red.
US Masters, 2005
Tiger Woods was wearing maroon in the final round of the US Masters, 2005. His defining moment arrived when he chipped the 16th hole from 25 feet down hill. The clothes he was wearing included a maroon polo shirt and
a black dress pant. Tiger often wears deep red or maroon when he is brimming with confidence.
US Open, 2008
He was initially seen in a blue dress shirt with a black cardigan but when he reached the final hole of the playoff against Rocco Mediate, he went into the club house and changed into a red polo shirt. After that Rocco was brushed
aside and Tiger won the US Open.
British Open, 2006
Tiger won the tournament by seven strokes and this was the same course where many players failed to equal par. Yet again he was in red.
Rickie Fowler - Orange
Memorial tournament, 2010
This 21-year-old was seen in orange at the Memorial tournament, 2010. The colour happens to be his favourite and he wears it when he is full of energy. At Quail Hallow, when Fowler finished 6th, he was seen in dirty orange and
according to him that was his lucky charm.
Stewart Cink - Green
He is in love with green. Be it the 2000 US Open or the 2004 US Open, Cink will be seen in all shades of green. In fact, Nike has signed Cink for endorsements and the colour of his entire wardrobe is green.
US Open 2009
Stewart Cink won at the Turnberry and took the claret jug home. However, before that, Cink was asked by the press about the strange colour he was wearing and he answered, “Don’t know, it’s my colour, it makes me feel fresh and
confident.”
Newspapers, websites and magazines were asking the same question regarding the neon green colour that roamed around the roughs and the fairways of the Turnberry Resort.
Paul Casey – Blue
His colour is blue and there is no doubt about that.
Tour championship, Atlanta
Currently, Casey is playing at the East Lake country club in Atlanta, which is the final leg of the playoff series. Casey entered the first round of the tournament in a blue polo shirt. He rose to an early lead with two other players.
This is, unsurprisingly, not the first time he’s turned up wearing blue.
Open Championship, 2010
Before the tour championship, Casey made the cut in the Open Championship where he finished third. Throughout the four day session, the world number seven was seen in a navy blue shirt.
So, Tiger wears red, Stewart adores green, Fowler loves orange and Casey’s colour is blue. Like normal people, these Golf icons too have favourites but one thing need to be kept in mind; despite wearing red, Tiger could not win
a single tournament in the current year. This signifies that it is not the colour but hard work and dedication that helps a player win.
