Golf: Former women’s golf coach sues director for discrimination
Katie Brenny, a former women’s golf coach at Minnesota University, filed a petition against her former employer for discriminating against the golfer for being a homosexual.
Brenny filed a lawsuit on 11 January, 2011 with the Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis. As per details, the coach was discriminated by the director of golf John Harris for being a homosexual.
She explained in a 14-page note that the director changed his behaviour with her shortly after discovering her sexual preferences. He restricted her duties, banned her from giving practice sessions to female learners and made the environment hostile for her. As a result, she resigned from the office in November 2010.
The 30-year-old was contacted by the press, but she refused to comment on the matter. Instead, she issued a statement through her attorney, Donald Chance Mark Jr., which said, “The atmosphere that was created became more and more hostile, to the point where it made it intolerable for me to even perform the limited administrative duties that had been reassigned to me. While I was never given an explanation for why I was treated this way, I later learned that I was discriminated against because of my gender and sexual preference.”
Harris was not served the notice, as he was not found at his office, or at his residence. The defendant was reached on the phone as he was out of town. The 1993 U.S. Amateur champion told the press, “I can’t comment on any of it. This thing will all play out, but I can’t comment on it now.”
True. The things will play out, as the plaintiff has sued the director for discriminating her at the work place for being a homosexual. If she wins the case, the director will pay her damages in excess of $50,000 as per state statute in accordance to Minnesota Human Rights Act.
Apart from the claim, what John Harris did to Katie Brenny seems to be wrong. Homosexual community is the ground reality of today’s society, thereby; their rights cannot be neglected by the state and the citizens.
