Golf: Graeme McDowell wins Belfast Telegraph Sports Star of the Year award
What a start! Graeme McDowell was honoured with Belfast Telegraph Sports Star of the Year 2010 award Monday night at Ramada Plaza Hotel in Ireland.
The ceremony was sponsored by Linwoods and Sport Northern Ireland to celebrate the success of a fabulous 62. The Northern Irish pride smashed a score of 62 in the final round of Hyundai Tournament of Champions to take the third spot.
To reckon his talent and achievements of 2010, Belfast Telegraph organised an award ceremony, but unfortunately, McDowell could not reach home to enjoy it. His parents, Marion and Kenny McDowell received the award on his behalf and once again felt the pride for having such a talented son.
Meanwhile, the 31-year-old was caught by the press regarding his latest achievement in Florida. The four-time winner of 2010 opened up and strolled back into memory lane.
He said, “Growing up in Portrush it was inevitable that I would play golf, but without what my parents did for me I wouldn't have gone on to do so well. It's made me very proud to be able to help them retire and give them the things they deserve in life. We come from a very humble background, a very working class background and my mum and dad worked very hard to give me everything that I wanted as a kid. They have been unbelievably supportive throughout my career.”
The world number five described few naughty moments of his childhood and said that he would sneak out in his father’s car, while he did not know driving. There were couple of moments when he hit the car in the pavement and got it scratched.
The US Open winner became teary, while recalling the victory at Pebble beach. With wet eyelids, McDowell said, “One of the greatest moments of my career was winning Loch Lomond which was probably the first professional event my dad saw me win in 2008, and then having him there at Pebble Beach on Father's Day at the US Open victory was incredibly special. Moments I'll never forget.”
The start of 2011 bought an award and a score of 62 for McDowell, who hails from a small town in Portrush. Let us hope the rest of the year also turns out to be as good as the start has been.
