Golf Grand Slam kicks off in Bermuda, Graeme McDowell excited
With the Grand Slam starting tomorrow in Bermuda, all the top players are very excited for this ‘grand’ event. The name is the accurate description of the importance of this event.  With all the major championship winners going against each other, the Port
Royal Golf Course will be set on fire as soon the champions tee off tomorrow.
The U.S Open Champion and recent Ryder Cup hero, Graeme McDowell is thinking of having some fun while giving his most brutal game in the upcoming event.  He has his eyes on victory in the highly awaited four men event.
This 36 hole event is definitely the most exclusive tournament in golf.  This year, the contenders of the Grand Slam are McDowell, Martin Kaymer, David Toms and Ernie Els. While being serious about his game, Graeme also wants to let loose and enjoy the two
days in South Hampton as much as he can.
On a conference call about the event, McDowell said that it’s going to be a great experience. "There's going to be an element of fun to it but I'm also looking to try and make a statement as a top major champion. Winning a major is something we dream about
as professional golfers and it's a very elite field to be part of next week”, said Graeme. McDowell also acknowledged that it’s very difficult getting into a four-ball tournament.
Attaining his first Major title at Pebble Beach in June, the U.S Open Champion is definitely looking forward to tomorrow. McDowell also said Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen will definitely be missed. He said it would have been fantastic to have all four
major winners but they still have laudable replacements at hand. Els and Toms will be playing instead of Mickelson and Oosthuizen.
Also very excited for tomorrow is Martin Kaymer. He has been on a roll this season and has grabbed many big titles for himself. Recently, Kaymer won the Links Championship. This added to his already charismatic victories of the PGA Championship at Whistling
Straits and the KLM Open. In the Ryder Cup, he played an integral role as well when he beat Bubba Watson.
Not only is Martin himself is feeling great, the predictions are going his way as well. For FIFA’s World Cup there was octopus Paul the Octopus, who predicted the winning team for every match. Prior to the event, an octopus at the Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo
chose Kaymer to win the event. Well, Martin really hopes the octopus is talented and has predicted correctly.
Phil Mickelson or lefty was chosen for the Grand Slam since he won the masters. Unfortunately, being diagnosed with a form of arthritis has hindered Mickelson’s ability to play. Also wanting a break from the game after the intense Ryder Cup, he opted out
of the Grand Slam.
Ernie Els has taken Mickelson’s place in the event and is more than happy to do so. Els, who has been out of form due to injury, is hoping that the Grand Slam will give him the chance to reach the top of the leader board once again. With Ernie instead of
Phil in the Grand slam, this would be the first time in sixteen years that there is no one representing the United States in the event.
Another champion missing will be Louis Oosthuizen, who with-drew from the money-spinning event because of his ankle injury. The Open Champion damaged his ankle ligaments while stepping in a pot hole and couldn’t participate in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
in Scotland either.
Former PGA Champion, David Toms, will be playing in place of Oosthuizen. David qualified via the Major Champions Points List. Toms said that he’s very excited to be part of the Grand Slam. Having played in the event before, he thinks it’s going to be a great
event. Toms thinks that it will be great way to end his 2010 season.
The Grand Slam was held in Hawaii form 2001 to 2006 and moved to Bermuda in 2007. With the stars teeing off tomorrow, this two day event will definitely be one to follow.
