Golf Latest: G-Mac honoured with RTE Sportsperson of the Year award
G-Mac’s magic season of awards does not seem to end as the 33–year-old Northern Irishman has bagged another title and this time he has been honoured with RTE Sportsperson of the Year.
The award was presented to McDowell on Thursday evening in Ireland on behalf of all the news broadcasters of the country. RTE stands for Radio Teilifís Eireann, which is Ireland’s national radio and television-company.
The purpose of the award was to present salutations to the player, who represented his flag on a worldwide level and made his people proud.
Ryle Nugent, Group Head of Sport RTÉ, commented regarding the awards, “RTE is thrilled to recognise and pay tribute to the fantastic achievements in Irish sport this year. These awards are testament to the sporting accomplishments
of Irish athletes, teams and organisations throughout the country and any one of the nominees would have made worthy winners. We look forward to broadcasting further Irish successes in 2011.”
The Irish big gun won four titles in the current season. He triumphed at Celtic Manor Wales Open in June and in the same month grabbed the title of being a US Open Champion. That was not enough for the 31-year
old though, as he hammered his name on the trophy of Andalucía Valderrama Masters and finally capped the season with a victory at Chevron World Challenge as well. To add icing to his cake, McDowell finished second in Race to Dubai.
To honour the player for his achievements, BBC held an award show, where the veteran was nominated for the Personality of the Year title, but ironically, he was not given the chance to go up the stage to
receive one. Irish broadcasters stepped in, to cheer the heart-broken player and presented him with a title.
Speaking to the media after the award ceremony, G-Mac said, “I had an amazing year and played some excellent golf. I will try keeping up with it and keep entertaining golf lovers worldwide.”
Apart from Graeme, the Irish Men’s Senior Boxing team won the Sports Team of the Year Award for winning five medals at European boxing Championship.
Now that is the way to honour national heroes.
