Golf Latest: Man arrested for stealing golf carts from Turlock Golf & Country Club
Turlock Golf & Country Club placed a board of ‘beware of the thieves’ in its parking area after authorities found five golf carts missing from the facility.
The golf course in Merced County, California registered a complaint with the Sheriff regarding disappearance of five golf carts on the night of December 22nd. In response to the request, a 48-year-old man was arrested by the authorities on Thursday evening. The suspect named Dennis Paul Cico was alleged of stealing the vehicles between the nights of December 10th- 22nd.
Chris Macias, who is the detective of the case, spotted the suspect near Bloss Avenue and Cedar Lane, while driving a golf cart. Driving a golf cart on public road is illegal, which is why Cico was confronted with the allegation; which he clearly denied. Deputy assistant Mark Taylor and Brian Miller were put on investigation by the detective. After obtaining solid evidence from visual camera installed in the parking lot, the investigators arrested Cico from his residence. However, they failed to retrieve the vehicles on the same night.
On Sunday evening, the detective received a call from an anonymous informer who revealed that Cico had informed someone of the theft and the golf carts were hidden in the Ballico garage. Police reached the garage and successfully retrieved all five golf carts.
On interrogation, the suspect accepted the crime and said that he stole the golf carts for a ride. The criminal was put behind bars in Merced County Jail on the charges of burglary. However, he will be released, if he agrees to pay $45,000 bail.
Chris Macias told the press that each golf cart was worth $3,500 to $5,000, which meant that a handful of money could be attained if they were sold. He said, “The criminal was arrested from his residence and all five vehicles worth $3,500 to $5,000 have been retrieved from him. The criminal will be produced in front of the session judiciary chief, if the criminal fails to produce bail.”
Incidents of such nature are registered on weekly basis throughout the world, but no clear security measures are taken to avoid them. If a criminal can trespass the parking lot without identification, then he can also access the clubhouse and possibly cause serious damage to players. Measures need to be devised by the authorities in this context to avoid any such incidents in the future.
