Golf Latest: Monty denies dissing the world's greatest golfer
Colin Montgomerie denies criticizing Tiger Woods; in fact he says Tiger is the best golfer ever.
Rumours have it that Colin Montgomerie the captain of the European side said earlier that if he was in Corey Pavin’s shoes, he would not have chosen Tiger Woods under any circumstances. Moreover, Tiger was having his ups and downs, thereby
he had a lot to explain and prove on the field. He further was reported to have said that he would have preferred Steve Stricker and Dustin Johnson over the world number, as they were relevantly steadier.
Fire rose in the American cap which just landed on Cardiff airport on Monday morning at 11.05 am. Players and the captain were furious on the welcome remarks. In fact, another rumour flew in right after the press conference that Rory McIlory,
while commenting on Tiger Woods said that he was more vulnerable than ever, therefore it will easier taking him down. In response to these comments, Graeme Mc Dowell was found saying that, “do not try Tiger Woods”.
However, Monday evening, Colin Montgomerie hailed Tiger Woods as the best golfer alive, moreover he used the phrase “the best golfer that has ever played the game" for the player he was speculated to diss.
Tiger Woods and his U.S Ryder Cup team had reached Wales on Monday, three days ahead of their battle against Europe at Celtic Manor. The team of 11 landed at Cardiff Wales Airport on British Airways-liveried charter flight from Atlanta. Five members of the
Ryder Cup team had taken part in the Tour Championship, which was being held over there. However, Tiger Wood’s caddie, Steve Williams could not take the same plane along with four other caddies as the plane had no room for them.
After landing on the airport, Woods and a handful of his colleagues stepped out of the plane, wearing sun glasses. Ironically, the Cardiff’s sky was dark grey and there was no use of gadgets like these. After disembarking the plane the team posed for pictures
before making the 25-mile journey along the M4 to Celtic Manor.
Praises started pouring in as soon as the team reached Celtic Manor. The first person to greet them was the host captain. Colin Montgomerie wasted little time in commenting about Tiger Woods and said, that he realised the efforts and the struggle made by
the world number one especially after troubles in his personnel life. He also reckoned Tiger Wood’s importance in the team.
According to Monty, he is delighted to see Tiger in Wales and he is all arms open to welcome the world’s greatest golfer alive. Although, he knows the fact that this is Tiger's first time in Wales, and his record of Ryder Cup which is comparatively weaker
than the individual record. Still Monty believes Tiger can play a decisive role in stopping the European team from stealing the trophy from the defending champions. He further added that he was looking forward to see how Tiger plays and whom he teams up with
so that he can counter him.
Talking about the opposite side captain, Monty said that it has been two years since their selection as captains therefore, it was up to them to guide the team in their tougher times. More the less, he added that he was eager for the coming Friday although
he has a hunch that the contest will be close knitted and it will come down to putts by the end of Sunday.
In the end, Colin Montgomerie had denied all forms of rumours that filled the media yesterday. Monty was said to give harsh remarks to Tiger Woods. However, Monty claims to have great respect for the player who is in search of his form, therefore he would
never say or do something that would eventually give a bad name to Welsh hospitability.
