Golf: Lee Westwood might lose cut at Qatar Masters
Three of the world’s top seven players might lose the cut at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters which is underway at the Doha Golf Club.
World number one Lee Westwood, world number six Paul Casey and world number seven Steve Stricker are hovering at the brink of trouble and might not proceed further.
The players who will compose a score of three-over-par will move further into the third round. However, according to the European Tour official stats, chances are that the three veterans will pack their bags and head home soon.
Westwood opened the tournament with a score of one-over-par owing to the inclement weather. He dropped four shots in the front nine and further deteriorated his scorecard to five-over-par, which is an indication of danger. Although the Englishman has nine
holes left to turn the tables, it does not seem likely that he will be able to do so.
Meanwhile, the winner of Volvo Golf Champions, Paul Casey teed off from the back and encountered a bogey on the second hole. He tried countering off the early loss with a birdie, but lost another chance at the fifth hole, when his second shot fell in the
bunker.
That was not it. Casey dropped two more shots at the back and settled with an aggregate of five-over-par.
The third player who might lose the cut is an American. Steve Stricker composed 76 in the first round, owing to the pack of six bogeys. Although he tried scuffling against the wind in the second round, he dropped a shot at the sixth hole which means he might
lose the cut as well.
Apart from the three punters, a rookie is also on the list of players who might miss the cut. The leader of Asian Order of Merit, Noh Seung-Yul signed for five bogeys, one birdie and one eagle in the opening round. Currently he is five-over owing to three
bogeys in the second round after twelve holes.
If the projections come true, Lee Westwood will automatically lose his number one rank, as Martin Kaymer is trailing closely behind.
