Golf: Lee Westwood to play Emirates Airline Invitational
World number one Lee Westwood has decided to join the field of Emirates Airline Invitational at the Yas Links Golf Club and will be teeing off in the pro-am on Monday.
Westwood addressed a press conference on Sunday in Abu Dhabi and officially declared his appearance in the United Arab Emirates golf season. He said, “As defending champion, I thought we ought to defend our title.”
The Englishman won the title in 2010 alongside Abdullah Al Naboodah, who happens to be the host of the event as well. In 2011, the one-day session will take place at the Yas Links Golf Club, which is the first of the link-style courses in the region. Moreover,
the tournament will be played in a four-ball layup, which will comprise of two players per team.
Apart from Westwood, world number four Graeme McDowell will also be a part of the field. He will play alongside editor of Sport360°, Steve McKenlay.
McKenlay, who now refers himself as S-Mac, is extremely excited about playing in the invitational. While speaking to the press, he said, “I can’t tell you how excited I am to get the opportunity to play with Graeme. It is going to be one of the most memorable
days of my life. I would like to thank the organisers and Emirates for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I think G-Mac and S-Mac should make a good team.”
Graeme McDowell won the 2010 US Open and finished second in the Race to Dubai as well. Other than G-Mac, Ross Fisher, Henrik Stenson and Retief Goosen are also on the list.
Seems like Emirates Airline Invitational has been successful in gathering top guns from around the world. However, golfers are not the only limelight in the one-day session. Apart from them, former English cricketers Michael Vaughan and Allan Lamb will also
participate in the event. Moreover, DJ Spoony, Jamie Redknapp, Ruud Gullit and David O’Leary are also said to tee-off.
The tournament will kick off at 10.00 am on Monday at the Yas Links Country Club with US$ 500,000 on stake.
