Golf: Mark Wilson wins Sony Open 2011
Mark Wilson won the Sony Open 2011 at the Waialae Country Club in Hawaii when he carved a 16-under-par in the 72-hole session on Sunday.
A Sunday finish was not quite expected in the event, owing to the early delay. The tournament’s first round was postponed because of heavy downpour. However, when the event formally kicked off, Mark Wilson was being rated as an average player and nothing
extraordinary was being expected from him. Despite that, he fired 65 in the first round and got himself registered in the lowest scorers.
On Sunday, when Waialae Country Club served as one of the worst challengers with strong winds howling on the east course along with wet greens, Wilson remained adamant. He chose driver as his weapon and holed three birdies in the day.
The first successful attack was accomplished at the fourth hole, where the wind was at its peak owing to the high altitude. However, for the next four holes, Wilson remained quiet, although netting a birdie on these spots was relatively easier. There was
a point when the spectators thought that Wilson would lose the lead on the eighth hole. However, he putted 7 feet from the green and managed to par the hole.
The confidence from the preceding hole served as a good source of motivation for the player. He fired the ninth tee shot right into the first fairway and wedged his way to the green, holing the second birdie of the day.
However, for the next eight holes, Wilson decided to play safe. He scored one point on the closing hole of the course and wrapped the 72-hole event with an impressive score of 67.
The player who was seen struggling in 2010 was fascinated with his victory.
Commenting on his success, Wilson said, “It was nice to go right to the tee and not have to think about it. I'm thankful it's over now.”
The first victory of the Professional Golf Association 2011 season has fallen in the laps of an American, which makes him eligible for the Masters.
