Golf: NaturalPoint launches new swing measurement technology
Corvallis-based NaturalPoint has introduced a new technology which will be used to measure the performance of golf gear.
Golf is a sport, which depends on latest gadgets apart from a golfer’s prowess. Various gear manufacturers focus on providing new equipment to enhance the feel of game on the course. That is why NaturalPoint has launched a new system to measure the efficiency
of the new technologies.
The new system is named as GEARS and will be used to measure the swing movement with the help of optical tracking technology. There will be a camera and software installed in a kit, which will measure the body, club and ball motion with real-time visual
feedback.
Jim Richardson, NaturalPoint co-founder and lead engineer for the OptiTrack motion capture line explained, “We're offering a level of empirical swing analysis that the golf industry has never had access to before. GEARS measures hundreds of data points per
second, including detailed 3D information like impact location, club head speed, shaft deflection, loft, lie, shoulder angle, spine angle and much more.”
He further added that the GEARS tracking module would help the instructors to recommend the ideal club to the golfer keeping in view the unique swing profile of the user. He said, “We're excited to offer an unprecedented view into the science behind golf,
and how it impacts important decisions like club fitting, swing adjustment and product design.”
According to the details presented in the launching ceremony, the GEARS system is available in three configurations: GEARS Club, GEARS Pro, and GEARS R&D.
GEARS Club will allow the pro shops and retailers to provide services according to the Professional Golfers Association standards without hiring the services of a tour professional.
The GEARS Pro will help the instructors and professionals in assessing the swing motion, club dynamics and body’s biomechanical motion with the help of a single click. With a camera installed in the system, the professionals will get an accurate history
of their swings.
Moreover, the GEARS R&D system, which is a combination of the GEARS Pro application and Tracking Tools, would help in conducting an inclusive research in developing the ideal club for a golfer.
The new optical technology is a new step in the development of golf gear. The system will not only provide engineering efficiency, but an ease in customising the clubs according to the golfers’ requirements.
