Golf News: Golf lle des Soeurs puts Pierre Emond entitlement in danger
Constituencies are never seen taking their job easy and neither does the borough of Verdun. On Tuesday, the borough handed out an ultimatum to Pierre Emond, who is the operator of the Golf lle des Soeurs. The borough has give Emond
90 days to conform the Golf lle des Soeurs course to environmental protection regulations and other borough related requirements.
According to the borough, if Golf lle des Soeurs fails to pass the regulations check, then Pierre Emond would be liable to lose the ability to operate the 9-hole course.
The Golf lle des Soeurs was first opened in the late July. Emond had been very excited and proud of this project and had said that this course would be one of the most beautiful and ecological golf courses in the world. Much was
noticeable about this course; especially the driving range which was marked as a design which is architecturally distinct and contains an exceptional environment. This is a nine-hole course which is present on the Nuns’ Island.
One of the basic reasons for the ultimatum is the protective netting. The netting installed to catch golf balls is present on the seventh hole and encroaches on the green corridor set-up. According to the borough, from the St.
Lawrence River to the Bois St. Paul, the green corridor ensures the passage of birds but the netting impinges on this territory.
Other than the issue of netting from the seventh hole, there is another reason for the ultimatum. If we move further from the 7th to the 8th hole, the water retention pond too has issues. It is connected straight
with the storm sewer but is unable to store the water at all.
Then there is the tee-time reservation policy. People who live in the borough and have a Access Verdun card would be, under this policy, allowed priority over tee-time reservation. However, Emond has as yet not submitted this policy.
The borough mayor, Claude Trudel, was quoted as saying, “I can't tolerate a developer acting in such a brutal way, by always confronting us with a fait accompli.”
Of course the benefit of doubt resides with Emond, but he hasn’t been available for an immediate comment in reply to the ultimatum.
