Golf News: Tiger Woods Might Lose Top Spot
The best player ever in the history of golf, Tiger Woods, is set to lose his top ranking in golf if he fails to recapture his form in the Bridgestone Invitational golf tournament played at Firestone Country Club.
Ever since his s*x scandal(s) erupted last year, the Florida based champion has been on a downward spiral both personally and professionally, losing his mark and wizardry on the course which took him to the echelon of top class golf.
He is set to be knocked out of the top ranking as soon as the ongoing week, and there are at least two contenders that are set to dethrone him from his rank.
He is understandably upset at his situation, and expressed his disappointment to the members of the media, adding that the media always makes it a point to remind him of his predicament.
"Am I conscious of it? Yeah. Because every tournament I go to you guys keep reminding me,” Woods told reporters.
"You just keep playing. How I got here in the first place is by winning golf tournaments and how I've been able to sustain it is winning golf tournaments. Winning golf tournaments takes care of a lot of different things and being number one is one of them."
Standing in Woods’ way is the British duo of Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson, who can both rise to the top spot with a victory at the World championship.
However they don’t have an easy ride; actually, the equation for the duo is quite complex.
Mickelson is set to take over the top spot with either a win or a top-four finish, if Tiger Woods finishes outside the first 37 in the championship.
Westwood, on the other hand, is set to take the number one slot if he wins the championship, but he would also have to hope for a poor performance by Woods (like a finish outside the top two).
The problems are compounded for Woods, who in addition to losing the top ranking might struggle to get a direct spot in his country’s team for the World championship.
He is currently placed at the number nine spot in the Ryder Cup rankings, and would be included in the line-up only if the captain of the team Corey Pavin handpicks him in his squad for the event that is set to be staged at Celtic Manor in Wales.
However, there is one thing certain about the American legend, and that is his motivation and never-say-die attitude, and that confidence in his abilities means that he can get through without the help of Pavin.
"I'm planning on playing my way into the team," Woods told the media, before adding, "Of late I've been driving the ball so much better, my iron game has been spotty and I just haven’t putted well all year."
"If I clean all that up, hopefully (I can) put together at least these two weeks."
Despite his slump in recent months, the American is set to give the event a serious shake, and if he wins the title he won by four shots at Firestone last year, the legend will join compatriot Sam Snead for the tour record of victories at a single event.
Snead, regarded as one of the best ever to take up the sport, won in the state of North Carolina eight times between 1938 and 1965.
