Golf: Paul Casey thinks Colin Montgomerie’s Bahrain course will be criticised
World number nine Paul Casey says that Colin Montgomerie will have to face the wrath of the contenders at the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions.
The reason behind this warning was the course which has been designed by the former Ryder Cup striker himself. Montgomerie aka Monty had the honours of designing the Royal Club which is located in Bahrain, while he was at the peak of his career.
The course is said to be unique and severe.
According to Casey, “Strange things will happen, but somebody will win and I want my 11th European tour victory. I think everybody knows Monty's going to get it in the neck this week. We have a very good course from tee to green. It is in wonderful condition
and requires great ball striking. The greens are very, very severe and you're going to hear a lot from the pros maybe complaining about it.”
Monty will have to face a few sarcastic comments from the players who will have to think of a strategy to deal with it.
Despite the threat, Casey believes that the players will get through it, provided they do not keep the severity of the course in mind and focus on the game instead. Royal Club has deep roughs, hard and fast greens which might serve as an edge for long hitters
with driving accuracy.
Apart from criticising Monty, Casey said that he was not happy with his game, which he termed as rusty. The 33-year-old Englishman finished 18th in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship despite having Nike method 001 putter. The veteran faced trouble
while putting on the greens of Abu Dhabi Golf Club and was extremely disappointed with his game.
While speaking to the press regarding his game, Casey said, “I'm playing okay, but I'm a bit rusty still. I do not quite have the control I would like. I know it is early in the season, but I worked hard in the off-season and I expected a bit more from myself
last week. It's a work in progress right now.”
Casey and others might face trouble on Royal Club, but there is one man who will be at ease. That one man is Monty himself. After all, who would know the course better than the designer would?
