Golf: Phil Mickelson doubtful for Match Play Championship
The winner of the 2010 Masters, Phil Mickelson might not compete in the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship set to take place in February 2011 at Dove Mountain.
Phil Mickelson disclosed the news in a press conference and said, “Right now I may end up playing and I may not, and it will depend on some out-of-school stuff that could prohibit us actually going on a family vacation which is what we did last year. Tucson
is one of my favourite places to play and the Match Play is one of my favourite tournaments to compete in, but with the kids having a week off school I would say I am 50-50 right now whether I do play.”
The left-handed golfer has been part of the field ever since the tournament started in 1999.
The 40-year-old star has three Masters victories and one PGA Championship win under his belt. However, he has been witnessing a rough time in golf ever since he was diagnosed with arthritis. He appeared at Augusta Nationals in 2010
and later took a long break to recover completely. However, after being selected for the Ryder Cup by the captain Corey Pavin, Mickelson improved folds.
He has managed to play a couple of events lately including his 2011 debut event, Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, where he finished 37th in a field of 148 players. The veteran smashed a score of five-under-par in the four-day
session, which portrays the rest on his clubs.
Mickelson knows that and he has been working on the matter. Commenting on the issue, he said, “This has been a good week for me given that I haven't played in the last two months and I was a little bit rusty. It has given me the chance
to see where I was performing well and where I was weak. The first three days my short game were very poor so that's an area I need to focus on and get sharper in the coming weeks.”
Mickelson might not be seen at the magnificent course of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, which is situated in the state of Arizona. The course is the home of WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship and features the top 64 players of the
world every year.
