The 2010 major winner, Phil Mickelson says he is ready for the battle at the Match Play Championship.
The American who dumped the World Golf Championship, which took place in Arizona in 2010, claimed that he would not be teeing up for the big event, owing to family reservations. However, after closing the Pebbles Beach National pro-am with a 71, Mickelson
declared change of plans.
He quoted, “I'll be there.”
The world-number-five will be joined by the top punters of the world. According to the recent developed list, the top 64 players on the Official World Golf Rankings will take part in the tournament.
This means Lee Westwood (1), Martin Kaymer (2), and Tiger Woods (3) will be part of the 64-man field.
Apart from these four veterans, the newly crowned king of desert swings, Alvaro Quiros will also tee off on February 23, 2011 at the Dove Mountain. Not to forget, the runner-up Anders Hanson who jumped in the rankings will also bid on the title. The player
climbed from 70th spot to 52nd.
Moreover, few players are kept on reserve. Such names include Henrik Stenson, who claimed the title of Match Play in 2007. The player failed to make a halfway cut in the Qatar Masters and hence fell from 62 to 65. Henrik will qualify the field, if Francesco
Molinari stays adamant with his decision of not playing.
The Italian told the press that his wife gave birth to his first child; hence, he will not show up for the big event. Molinari tweeted, “not yet no, 60% yes 40 % no right now.”
Molinari has time until Friday to take the final decision as the list will be out on Sunday and after that, the players who are put on reserve will have a chance on the 64-man field.
The Accenture Match Play Championship will take place February 23rd with a slight change of format. Instead of 36-hole championship match on Sunday, the tournament will have an 18-hole semi-final, which will take place on Sunday.
Phil Mickelson will be part of the field, which will see the top punters of the world battle for the title.
