Golf: Polar Bear Golf Tournament to go on despite inclement weather
The 6th annual Polar Bear Golf Tournament will take place at the Indian Hills Golf Course at the Murfreesboro Noon Exchange Club on Saturday, 22
January, 2011.
Earlier, speculations were rife that owing to heavy rainfall, the tournament would be cancelled. Therefore, Murfreesboro Noon Exchange Club, which is the host of the event, held a press conference on Monday to announce the dates of the event.
Chet Dunlop, a golf professional at Burlington Golf Centre, told the media, “We’ve faced almost every condition you can face. With more snow, rain or sleet potentially falling over the next week. I could not say right now, what the conditions will be like
next Sunday. But the tournament will take place at the predefined dates. It’s a way to get people out of the house in winter. Let’s get out in the great outdoors no matter what it’s like and just play.”
Every year, Polar Bear Golf Tournament kicks off with 60-65 participants, who play with coloured balls and interestingly, there is no penalty if the ball gets lost in the snow. Moreover, in this nine-hole event, the participants are allowed to relish the
tasty delights offered at the Hogan’s Cider Mill between the gaps unlike normal tournaments.
Apart from providing entertainment during the winters, Murfreesboro Noon Exchange Club will hold indoor practice facility and free clinics for participants and spectators throughout the event.
According to the schedule, the participants will start checking-in at 8:30 am, but the contest will officially kick off at 10 am. A $75 fee will be charged from each player, which will include breakfast, lunch, coffee, hot chocolate, range ball, cart rental,
green fees and goodie bags.
Moreover, a maximum of 144 players will be allowed to play in groups of four and all the participants will have to register in advance.
The purpose of the event is to gather people at one spot for the pursuit of entertainment during the freezing winters. Apart from the entertainment, the event serves as a charity fundraiser for Exchange Club Child Abuse Prevention projects.
Tournaments of such rare type serve the purpose of entertainment when chilling temperatures leaves indoors as the only hideout.
