Golf: Residents fight to keep Northern Hills Golf Course green
Northern Hills Golf Course in San Antonio might change into a residential complex, but the locals will not let the authorities to do so.
The venue is the only golf course in the locality, which is why the residents of the area are out on the streets to protect its serenity.
Mike Gallagher, the Homeowners Association President of the Northern Hills Subdivision, has filed a petition with the City council to stop the authorities from taking the place down.
Gallagher told the press, “They've turned courses for industrial use, commercial use. This is probably one of the most beautiful courses in all of San Antonio. The worst thing that could happen is that it would be changed to something else. I am sure the
property values would be hurt considerably if it were changed to an apartment complex. We'd ask city council and all the people to support this vote that will happen Thursday to make sure this beautiful area remains a gold course for all San Antonio.”
Normally, City council makes the final decision, which is why all the residents of Northern Hills are waiting for the final word. The council will hold a general vote on 20 January, 2011 in which they will weigh the pros and cons of demolishing the course.
However, it seems that the authorities are in a strong position, as the area has been tagged a multi-family zone, which means that it has been assigned for residential area and can be sold to a developer.
On the other side, the residents want the opposite. They want the council to stamp it a G-zone. G- Zone means an area allotted for a golf club.
District 10 Councilman John Clamp highlighted the sentiments of the residents and said, “We want it to be ‘G’ Zoning for strictly Golf course. As of now, the land is zoned multi-family. If this golf course turns into a multi family quote complex, or complexes
it would be devastating for this neighbourhood.”
The fate of Northern Hills Golf Course now lies in the hands of the City Council, who will decide whether the beautiful club would remain green or not.
