ok, let me give u a situation. i hit a ball, and it lands right in the middle of the fairway. my opponent hits their ball, and it also lands right in the middle of the fairway. we approach the balls, and realize that they are right next to eachother, and I can't hit my own golf ball without hitting hers, and she can't hit her golf ball without hitting mine. are we allowed to mark one of the balls? what is the exact ruling? and please give the section of the rules book.. o, and does this rule also apply to when chipping around the green, or just in the fairway? thanks for the help..

  1. vdrive_6 is correct! I came face to face with your situation on a few occasions.   you just ask the person to mark their ball while you hit.

  2. The first answer was perfect. I'll just add that the player marking his ball places the ball between his thumb and index finger as to not disturb any grass, dirt, etc from falling off the ball. He cannot put the ball in his/her pocket.

  3. OK, in a nutshell-

Rule 22-2: Ball interfering with play.  You can requst that your partner/opponent's ball be lifted if you think it will interfere with your shot.

Then, following rule 20-1 and 20-3, the ball must be marked, lifted and replaced (not dropped), which mean you have to put it back in the same spot and conditions.  You also cannot clean the ball, unless you are on the green.

If two balls interfere with each other in a bunker, the lie of the marked ball must be re-created as best as possible.  This can cause some argument about how bad (or favorable) the original lie was.

    Hopes this helps

  4. Rule 22 - the person closest to the hole just marks their ball and the other one hits.  No penalties for either player.  Would also apply if chipping near the green.

  5. I don't have a rule book, but it happened at the FBR Open today where two golfers hit the drives near the green and one of them marked their ball so the other could hit.  It applies anywhere.
