Golf News: Russ Cochran surges to early lead after smashing a 64
Russ Cochran started from the 5th place and is now leading the charts. Cochran smashed a spotless round with 6 birdies to surge into lead by one stroke. He was followed by Michael Allen and Mark O'Meara at the second spot.
The American wrapped Thursday’s round with three bogeys and three birdies but it was not enough for him. On Friday morning, when he came out of the clubhouse to tee, his face showed signs of determination. As a result, he carded the first birdie of the second
round on the second hole on par-five. Meanwhile, the rest of the front nine were covered with a par and he wrapped it with a total of 34.
The back 9 were a different story altogether. Russ Cochran shot five successive birdies on the first five holes. He made a course record with the lowest score by far and notched the lead at the Constellation Senior Players Championship. This is his fourth
event on the Champions Tour and if he wins it, it will be a hat-trick for the player.
Cochran told the press that he took advantage from the early conditions and that ran in his favour. He added, "We got it going early, and then like you do a lot of times, you kind of hold on for dear life after that, but the start was great."
The player who wants to make his debut victory at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm was chased by Michael Allen. The American’s scorecard was quite impressive but unlike Cochran, Allen posted five birdies against two bogeys to secure a second spot finish on the
leaders board of the event that was carrying a purse of $2.7 million. The veteran was joined by Mark O'Meara who carded an identical score in the first round with five birdies and three bogeys.
The last round leader, Tom Kites failed to keep up with his superb performance and wrapped the round with four birdies and four bogeys. He teed off from the back 9 and was unable to cope with the high roughs. He carded three bogeys at par-4 holes but offset
them with three birdies. The front nine was comparatively better and it was the last nine holes that saved Kites from drifting down. Later, he was joined by Jeff Sluman. The American gave a splendid performance with utmost improvement; he rose from the tied
fifth spot to the fourth by carding three birdies and no bogey in the second round.
While speaking to the press, Sluman said, “The golf course is very difficult, and if you can play the weekend under par, you're going to be in very good shape, that's what you work for."
Moving forward, the leader of the money list, Bernhard Langer fell to the 27th spot after continuing with terrible performances. The German carded four bogeys in the second round and wrapped it up with 3-over-par. He was further chased by Tom
Watson, who posted a score of 78 after the round on Thursday that was completed with 2-over.
The number two on the European money list, Fred Couples took the withdrawal from the second round after giving a terrible performance in the first. He had six bogeys and one double bogey in the first round. Couples was suffering from back pain which was
hampering his performance, hence he decided to call the tour off. He was joined by Hal Sutton.
This is it for the second round of the Constellation Senior Players Championship which was taking place at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in Maryland. The winner of the Songdo Championship and the SAS Championship surged to the club house lead with a course
record of 64 in the event which is carrying a purse of $2.7 million.
