Question:

Golf Shaft Stiffness, Torque, Weight?

I'm a keen golfer intending to reshaft my Titleist 905R driver but desperately need help and advise on how to select a good shaft that suits me well. I'm only aware of Regular & Stiff Flex. Other than that, the shaft torque, weight, length, grip thickness, etc are all alien to me. All i know is that they all makes a difference to the ball flight and distance. What do they actually means and how to get one with all the factors that suits me well? I'm currently using a Adila 65 R, downgraded from Fujikura Speeder Stiff after my friend told me its to stiff for me to handle it.

  1. You need a stiff shaft if your swing is faster or equal to 90mph.

  2. Flex:

Get flex according to swing speed.  Every shaft has different flex.  Means Fujikura Speeder R flex is not the same

flex as Aldila NV R flex.  It means if you have 90 MPH swing speed, you might need a Regular flex from one shaft  or a Stiff flex from another shaft model.

    Torque:

Resistance to twisting at impact.  Low torque, less twisting.  Higher torque, more twisting.

    Bend-Point

High bend-point, low trajectory.  Low Bend-Point, high trajectory.

You have to get custom fitting to know your swing.

  3. The only way you can actually know what you really need is to have a pro test you, that is if you want to get that detailed on finding the right shaft.

  4. Shaft Flex: Get your swing speed measured and choose accordingly. Usually stronger the flex, the lesser degree of torque which i believe equals lower launch angle.

Grip: Go with what feels best in your hands.

Shaft weight: Well according to Taylormade's website their superfast technology which incorporates a super light 50 g shaft supposedly gives you 5 yard increase in distance.

Best thing to do: Get yourself fitted for a shaft.
