Golf: Shahid Abbas wins Royal Palm Golf title
Shahid Abbas emerged as the winner at the annual golf event of the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club on Monday.
Royal Palm Golf and Country Club organised a 36-hole stroke-play contest in Lahore. The club is known for its undulating fairways and majestic greens. Moreover, it is stretched on par-72, which makes it one of the longest courses in the region.
On Monday, Abbas fired a score of 157 strokes, which gave him an edge of five strokes over the veterans. He was followed by Amir Mehmood, who nearly matched the score set by Abbas at the 15th hole of the second round, but could not stay vaulted
to his bid. He dropped a shot at the penultimate hole of the course and failed to pick up points on the closing. Abbas took advantage of the opportunity and charged to the top with his accurate putting and scorching drives.
Eight strokes below was the veteran, Mohsin Zafar. He wrapped the day with 165 strokes. Sardar Murad also finished on the third spot along with Mohsin.
Apart from the winner, there were several other categories encompassed in the tournament. Mohammad Zafar was honoured with the title of Champion of Champions for scoring the lowest score on the entire event, whereas, Mohsin Zafar finished as a runner-up
in that category.
Winter singles match play was won by Shahid Abbas, while Muhammad Khan Leghari who took an edge in the longest drive competition finished in the second place. Apart from topping the record of longest drives, Leghari won the Doubles alongside Amir Mehmood,
while Muhammad Ramzan Sheikh and Jameel Khalid finished a stroke behind.
Another player won an honour for chipping the ball nearest to the pin. That punter was Faisal Malik, who amazed the spectators with his Green Hits in Regulations stats.
The event was followed with a prize ceremony, in which Royal Palm chief executive officer Muhammad Ramzan Sheikh, Royal Palm Golf Club captain Mohammad Tariq, and Punjab Golf Association vice president Maqbool Babri awarded cash prizes and souvenirs to the
winners.
