Golf; Shrek loses the cut in Alfred Dunhill Championship
Louis Oosthuizen disappointed his fans by losing the cut to the third round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.
The South African compiled a score of one-under-par on the second day at Leopard Creek. Louis teed off from the back and failed to impress the crowd with his usual laid-back style. He parred the first three holes before picking up a birdie at the par-5 15th.
However, he failed to do much as he wrapped the first half with one more point. On his way to the back, the 28-year-old drove the tee shot onto the fairway, which slightly sloped before elevating towards the green. His third stroke caught the flag and Louis
Oosthuizen succeeded in catching the first birdie on the front.
With a gap of three holes, Oosthuizen tried attacking the par-3 5th, but failed as the ball caught the bunker on the fairway. The failure did not hamper his morale and Oosthuizen stroke one more birdie putt at the next hole, to which he succeeded.
The veteran dropped two points at the eighth and wrapped the round with one-under-par.
The score would have got him through the weekend, but the early blow caused by 76 in the first round hammered a major damage. Oosthuizen double-bogeyed the second and the seventh hole in the front before dropping two more shots at the closing holes. He wedged
two birdies in between, but the impact was negligible in front of the initial damage. The veteran reeled two birdies against two bogeys and capped the first round with a score of four-over-par.
The terrible performance delivered by the conqueror of St Andrews was least expected at his home course. Louis has been out of form, ever since July. He broke his ankle on a hunting trip before the PGA Grand Slam and failed to compete for the massive title.
Last week he competed in the NedBank Challenge, but did not show his champion side and finished last in the 12-man invitational.
Commenting on his form Oosthuizen said, "The Open win has definitely sunk in, I've been feeling drained for the last five months. The year is getting very long; I had a very difficult schedule with the Sunshine Tour at the end too. You want to do everything,
but it is tough being mentally tired. It makes it difficult to play well; it gets to you in the end. It was frustrating, but it was also a good time to get off, spend some time with the family, and think about what I'd achieved.”
The world number 24 had a fabulous start this year with a victory in Andalucia Open in March. However, his graph came down because of the fatigue initiated by continuous tours around the globe.
In an interview the resident of Mossel Bay said, “I always saw myself as winning one of the majors, but I didn't think it would happen so soon. It definitely gave me a lot of confidence to tee it up in all sorts of different tournaments. Major championships
are what we work for; it is what we enjoy playing in. But winning in Andalucia was also quite special because it took me a while to break through in Europe. So the Open just topped off the year, really, and playing in the Sun City Challenge last week was also
very special."
The British Open Champion has lost the cut into the third round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek in South Africa. A field of thirty players will compete for the purse of $5000, 000 and only one will walk home with the prize money of $752,
900.
