Question:

Golf - Slicing?

I was wondering....I usually slice the ball when i hit with my driver, but hardly with my irons...what would the best type of driver be to prevent or minimize the slice?

Ex....shaft flex + torque, club head loft

I currently have a taylormade r580, stiff flex, mid torque, 9.5 degree loft

  1. listen just slow everything down when u step up to the tee the driver is made to put the ball 300 yards down the fairway so let it do the job dont force it. i had the exact same issue as u my irons never had problems just the driver and i just quit trying to kill the ball and slowed everything down my swing is still well over 100 mph but not peaking at 150 and the ball is going straight and long just like in a dream.

  2. This is the secret....It is not the arrow, it is the archer...

No driver will correct your problem.

There are three kinds of slices, straight slice, outside/inside swing slice, and the push slice.  The straight slice is not so bad as the others.

Inspect your grip,  Take a full turn with a low and slow take away.  Start you club down before your hips move, keep you left arm straight with your left elbow against your ribs.  Take your left shoulder under your chin before starting your down swing.

See your club pro for a lesson.   He can spot in a minute what your problem is, and fix it in 10 minutes.  It will take some practice on your part.  Become a good archer.  Save your money to buy some more arrows.  You don't need a new driver.

  3. swing slower

  4. Save your money and fall in love with your driver again. It is just a matter of learning to hit with your driver. Changing clubs will only frustrate you more and you would have spent a bunch of money for nothing.

Use a stronger grip with the driver. That is you should rotate your hands a little bit on the handle so that your thumbs are a little behind the 12:00 position. This will help in closing the club face at impact and straighten out your ball flight.

Take that to the driving range before practicing on the course.

  5. Majority of the time it is not the equipment unless it is the flex causing the club head to fall behind.  But since you have a stiff flex, my guess is that you are actually turning your body too early and your club head is still coming down, so when you make contact, your body is NOT square to the ball; result is open club face and you slice.

Assuming your stance, swing plane, grip...etc are all somewhat correct, here's another prospective view on why drivers tend to slice:

Since drivers are much longer in length than your irons, it WILL take longer to come around and find the ball.  So you can't swing it like an iron.  Try taking an iron from top of your back swing to ball contact, feel that, then do the same with the driver.  Get comfortable with the lag time with the driver from top of back swing to contact, then hit couple balls WITHOUT trying to crush it... this worked to me and fixed my driver slice.

  6. Spend your money on lessons.

    It's not the Equipment

  7. gotta change your swing, stay true, there's nothing wrong with that driver man. make sure your arms go thru before your body, feels like ur not gving it all you got, but i promise you distance is not gonna be affected. i'm out, peace off

  8. youre swinging too fast and yourdriver cant catch up to your body and therefore forcing the clubface to be open at impact and if iwere you, i would geta driver that is weighted to produce a draw, 9.55 degrees of loft and a stiff shaft

  9. How to turn golf frustration into fun. "The Dave Way" will not only will fix your golf slice, it will give you a more complete outlook on the game. It will license you to own the round, instead of the round owning you.

  10. Well of course irons are eaiser to control because they have a flatter surface. I don't think you'll need a new driver just pratice on your swing. It can be that your dominate arm is comming to far in.

A drill I used is to pratice your swing without a club while putting a towel under your swinging arm with having it fall. - Worked for me.

    Hope this helps,
