Golf Special Report: Graeme McDowell will be the only major winner in Hawaii.
The 2011 PGA Tour Opener will take place coming Thursday at the Plantation Course in Kapalua Hawaii. The Hyundai Tournament of Champions will only feature one of the four major winners of 2010. The U.S Open Champion, McDowell, chose to take up his PGA Tour
card this year. It’s the fourth time that only major winner has taken part in this event. The first event of the 2011 PGA season is worth €4.2million.
Along with famous stars of 2010, Martin Kaymer, Louis Oosthuizen and Phil Mickelson, many other players chose not to compete. Oosthuizen wants to be near home in order to compete in the South Africa Open. Belonging to South Africa, Louis really values the
Open.
Another golfer really excited for the Open is Darren Clarke who recently got engaged to former Mi Northern Ireland, Alison Campbell.
“I have enjoyed starting my season with the Africa Open the last two years,” said the 42-year-old.
“In 2009 I had a pretty good result and last year’s Africa Open sparked a return to form for me, so I'm really looking forward to playing in East London,”
said Clarke.
As for Mickelson and Kaymer, both of them want to start playing in competitive golf after some time. Having a hectic and fruitful year, Kaymer wants to take some time off before he starts playing. The other players not taking part in the event are Tiger
Woods, World number one Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy.
With so many star players missing, this is the perfect opportunity for G-Mac to start the year with a bang. Having an amazing year in 2010, Graeme is headed in 2011 with a lot confidence. Along with his U. Open Victory, Graeme also won the Celtic Manor Wales
Open, Andalucía Masters and most recently the Chevron World Challenge.
After winning the U.S Open, McDowell was already in the spotlight. Following the Ryder Cup in October, McDowell became even more popular after scoring the winning putt. Graeme defeated the American Hunter Mahan in the singles match and sealed victory for
the European Team. Emerging as the Ryder Cup hero, McDowell won the Andalucía Masters and made this year all the more special.
Just recently, Graeme defeated Woods in his own tournament at the Chevron World Challenge after he beat him in a play off. McDowell has been awarded by both US and American golf writers as the player of the year.
Also being named the European Tour player of the year, McDowell hopes to achieve a lot more in 2011.
