Golf Special Report - Redstone Golf Club home of Shell Houston Open: Part 1
The Shell Houston Open is the last stop for the Professional Golf Association Tour before the Masters and it is about to hit the Redstone Golf Club. The club is known for its long pars and its similarity with the Augusta National, which makes it a good practice venue before the major championship.
Here is a look at the course layout.
Hole# 1
The course welcomes the top golfers of the world with a par 4 hole, which requires accuracy at the tee.  The landing area for the tee shot is extremely small, as it is covered by fairway bunkers on both the sides. Player must make sure, the ball safely lands on the fairway or else carding for a par won’t be possible. The green is reachable, provided the tee shot falls on the undulating plane that separates the green from the fairway.
Hole# 2
The par-4 stretches on 429 yards and once again, it requires a good start to card a birdie or an eagle.  The landing area for the tee shot is wide enough to catch an errant shot, but avoiding the long hits is necessary, as the fairway bunkers await the ball.  Apart from that, the fairway turns dogleg right; therefore, it is preferable to keep the ball slightly on the left to target the green easily. Meanwhile, the green is protected by guards on both sides.
Hole# 3
The par-4 hole is stretched on 392 yards. The fairway is generously wide to catch the ball, but the green is dangerously protected by water on the front and bunkers on the right. Players will need to keep the ball on the right to avoid the slope, which has a record of pushing the ball into the water.
Hole# 4
This is the first par-5 of the front nine holes on Redstone. The green in reachable in two shots, provided the tee shot lands on the safe area situated right of the bunker on the left. The second shot should aim towards the centre of the undulating fairway, which has water on the left and a huge bunker on the foot. The green is flat on the sides and mounds in the centre, therefore, keep the ball on the sides to avoid the ball from rolling into the rough.
Hole# 5
This is a par-4 hole, which has water on the left of the fairway. The water determines the approach to attack the green. Keep the second shot slightly towards the left, but make sure the speed is adjusted, as the ball has chances of going for a swim, if it is not controlled. Attack the green from the left and earn the opportunity of carding a birdie.
This is it for the first half of the course preview. For the next half, refer to bettor.com
