Golf Special Report: The Tiger is not roaring.
On Monday, Tiger Woods was replaced by Lee Westwood as World Number One. It’s a big surprise to see how humble the carnivore of golf is being after losing something that was his for five years. Maybe Tiger is aware himself of how much he has messed things
up. Surely, the party boy would be regretting even looking at another woman apart from Elin Nordegren now.
Today, Tiger Woods said that he does not deserve to be World No 1 and it wasn’t a surprise to him that he lost his ranking to Lee Westwood. Woods said that in order to be in the number one spot, one has to win a golf tournament. Woods said that that’s how
he got there in the first place and how he kept his position for some time. Seeing how Tiger hasn’t won any tournaments this year, it is no wonder he lost his place as World Number One.
The root of his problems is would definitely be Tiger’s disloyalty to his beautiful ex-wife Elin. Things started getting bad when last year in November Wood’s car crashed in front of his Florida house. Following the accident, the news of his various extra
marital affairs came out and really shattered the respectable image Woods had in front of the whole world.
Woods, who was the emblem of a good husband and a good dad, really disappointed his family. The couple, despite many attempts to work on their marriage, called it quits and got a divorce on August 26th. It was also in August when Tiger posted
his career’s worst score with an 18 over and coming in 78th position.
Whatever Tiger’s ‘extra’ curricular activities were, it appears they will keep haunting the ferocious feline for many years. With Woods being in the media and that too not on a very good note, things are bound to get depressing. When asked about how he felt,
he said that he just has to accept the facts. Being very practical, Tiger said,
“As far as emotions, it is what it is. As I said, you have to win in order to become No1 in the world and you have to win a lot to maintain it. That's just the way it goes."
The last tournament Tiger won was the Australian Masters last November. The last taste of victory Woods got before things started getting bad. Woods is set to play in the 2010 WGC-HSBC Championship in Shanghai this weekend. This would be the first event
he plays after the dethroning by Lee Westwood. Westwood was in very close competition with fellow European Martin Kaymer, who would have taken the top spot if he won or finished second place in the Andalucía Masters.
Westy’s splendour might be short lived considering Woods, Kaymer and Phil Mickelson can become World Number one if they play well in this week’s Championship in China. Lee himself knows that even though the tiger isn’t roaring it doesn’t mean he can’t bite.
"I would not write Tiger off as quickly as that," Westwood said.
"He has gone away and come back before. He will be there or thereabouts.” Westwood surely realizes that the 14-time major champion winner is a threat to his new found glory.
After China, Woods will be playing in Melbourne, Australia to defend his title. Before the year ends, Tiger is also going to compete in his own tournament at the start of December. Woods really hopes that he can end this year on a good note. He’s really
looking forward to the three tournaments ahead and thinks he has improved since the USPGA. The former World Number one has been working on his swings with his new coach, Sean Foley.
Overall, 2010 has been a very bumpy ride for Tiger Woods. Seeing what he has achieved, a little setback will surely not tame the tiger and you never know, the next roar might be nearby.
