Golf: Tom Lehman wins the Allianz Championship
Tom Lehman smacked an aggregate of 13-under-par to win the Champions Tour’s Allianz Championship on Sunday.
The final round kicked off in freezing conditions but despite that, Lehman walked to the Old Course with a wedge in his hand and set the frozen greens on fire.
The American birdied the fifth hole, but soon dropped a shot on the ninth to give away the only point earned. He wrapped the first half at par. However, on his way to the closing holes, Lehman netted four birdies against a bogey, which
helped him take an edge of one stroke over Jeff Sluman.
Lehman was not happy with his putting, but seemed happy with his overall accomplishment.
He said, “I was disappointed with my putting (32 putts), but I'm pleased with my score.”
The winner was chased by a duo, which was initially in the lead. Jeff Sluman and Rod Spittle smashed an aggregate of 12-under-par to share the runner-up spot.
Two strokes below stood Olin Browne and Russ Cochran. Browne smashed his lowest score of the tournament and managed a 69 with the help of seven birdies.
The winner of the money list, John Cook finished tied at 17th spot. He composed a blemish-free scorecard with four bogeys. He was joined by Bernard Langer and Australia’s Peter Senior. The Aussie started the tournament as a leader, but failed
to maintain the lead by the end of the event. He faltered at the hands of the greens and composed a score of 5-over-par on Sunday after missing three par putts and encountering a bunker at the sixth hole.
Senior held the lead until the second round. However, his putter failed him at the last minute, which eventually led his putts per round average to 2.083.
Meanwhile, the former Ryder Cup captain, Corey Pavin once again failed to shine. He birdied two holes in the front and one in the back, but that did not reduce the loss. Pavin bogeyed two holes, excluding a double-bogey at the tenth hole.
The worst score of the day was produced by Leonard Thompson. The American composed an 82 with eight bogeys, two double-bogeys, one eagle, and two birdies.
