Question:

Golf Troubles?

I am a fairly new golfer. I shoot around 100-105. I have a cheap set of clubs and one of those 5 dollar drivers from the mall. I can not hit the driver straight at all. I have started using an old 3 wood probaly from the 70's or 80s ( actually looks like wood) and i can hit preatty far and striaght almost everytime. Does a cheap driver make a differance. If i bought a better driver would it eliminate the dramtic slice. How much farther does say a 100 dollar driver hit the ball considered to a 15 dollar one. Thanks

  1. the first huge thing to check when buying a driver is your swing speed.  if you have a hard swing and you are using a weak flex then that could be your problem and you will never fix your slice. Go to a big golf store such as Golf Town and they will check your swing speed for free.  for me i say buying a nice driver is totally worth it

  2. A new driver would probably not fix your slice, i have bought 5 or 6 drivers trying to do it, and still slice the ball.  Although if you did want to, you could try buying one of the square headed drivers.

  3. a good driver and a good set of clubs will take about 5 to 10 shots off your game and if i was you take a lesson or two you are doing pretty good to hit 100 to 105 for a beginner

  4. Maybe you should think about purchasing an offset driver. It removes the slice, I know it sure helped me when I was starting out. (Ended up shooting 80s by the end of my first year) And on the cheap club stuff, personally I think the more you pay, the better quality. Its not gonna add an extra 100 yards or anything but it will make you more consistent.

  5. Hi there,

Whilst the problem is likely to be a swing fault. Swinging in to out, undoubtedly your $5 dollar drive is not helping. If you have an ebay account i would recommend looking for a taylor made R5 draw driver in anything from 10.5 to 13 degrees. Also check that it is the conforming version.

I know guys that still use these on tour. They are one of the most forgiving and longest drivers around and because they are a few years old you will probably pick one up for about $30. That will give you a huge bang for your buck :o) !!!
