Golf Update - 2010 Tour Championship: Paul
Casey fails to retain early lead on second day
The second day of 2010 Tour Championship ended on Friday eve at the East Lake Country Club, with Paul Casey failing to keep up with his last night’s lead. Casey entered the second round with a 66 while wrapped it up with a 71. The player fell from T1 spot
to the T5. He joined the fifth group with Retief Goosen and Kevin Na.
Paul Casey was only seven strokes behind the leaders of the day. The reason for his fall was a badly executed round. He started the round with a birdie on the first hole of the front nine but down the lane, he lost his momentum and pared rest of the holes
except for the fifth, which he bogeyed. He completed the first nine holes with a score equal to par-35.
While proceeding towards the back nine, he again carded two birdies at the tenth and the fourteenth holes but followed them with three consecutive bogeys at the closing holes. Paul marked the second round with one over par. He is currently No. 5 in the FedEx
standings, which means that he is the highest-seeded player without a victory, this season.
If he wins the FedEx Cup or even reaches the runner-up spot then he will toss aside Matt Kuchar’s position. According to Casey, he realized that he did not pick up the shots the way he did yesterday. It’s not the lack of energy or confidence but it just
wasn’t his day. Golf experts believe that the way Casey had taken charge on the first day it looked as if he was in the mood to take the FedEx massive pool of prize money back home. However, he lacked his long hits and driving accuracy in the second round.
Golf is a game of accuracy and shots need to be delivered with consistency. If Paul wants to get up there and challenge those guys, then he will have to hit a lot better than he did yesterday. Although, Casey is the World No. 7th but still, he
wasn’t picked up by the Ryder Cup captain, Colin Montgomerie. The only reason seemed to be his inconsistency and failure to pick up a title, this season. Colin perceived Padraig Harrington to be better than Paul Casey, as Harrington was far more experienced
when it came to the Ryder Cup.
Apparently, this decision of Monty has shown no results by far. Padraig is failing to meet his captain’s expectations for the 2010 Vivendi Cup as he finished its second round with two under, which was a score eleven strokes away from that of the group leader.
Now, coming towards the winner of the second round; Luke Donald and Jim Furyk took the mid way lead by posting an aggregate score of 8 under.
Furyk made a five under with 132 strokes while Donald made four under with the identical number of strokes to that of Furyk. Both the boys were followed by Geoff Ogilvy, who was only one stroke behind. Apart from Donald, another player smashed a 66 and that
was Retief Goosen. He smashed five birdies and one bogey in the second round with the help of 136 strokes.
According to the experts, the second day started with a surprise as Casey was down to the fifth while Furyk was rising up. Yet again, three of the American Ryder Cup players are at the bottom down spot with scores over par. These include Bubba Watson, Jeff
Overton and Dustin Johnson. This is a bad sign! Corey, you need to ask your boys to pick up pace or else, the 2010 Ryder Cup trophy would be out of your hands. As for Casey, two more rounds are still on hand and hopefully, he will make something good out of
them.
