Golf Update: Andalucía Valderrama Masters
The next spot for the PGA Tour is Spain where the inaugural Andalucía Valderrama Masters will be taking place at the Club de Golf Valderrama from October 28-31.
PGA Tour confirmed the field size of 96 players who will have a golden prospect to perk up their Race to Dubai ranking on The European Tour International schedule by playing for a winner prize of €500,000 from a €3 million purse in the inaugural Andalucía
Valderrama Masters. According to the PGA website, the field has been reduced, but five sponsor exemptions and four golfers from the Spanish Order of Merit have been added to it. The reason behind this reduction is the day light hours, which are scanty in fall.
Moreover, in order to accommodate the golfers only the top 50 players will make the cut for the finale.
The championship, which underlines European Tour’s alarming joint venture with the Spanish tour, will be the final event of the season in Europe. Shortly, the Dubai World Championship will follow-up in four weeks to seal the year’s end. Andalucían tournament
has been chosen as the final event on the European tour as it was the inaugural as well.
In March, the tournament was won by the Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen in the presence of a very competitive field. With a gap of four weeks, he declared victory at St Andrew as well. Similar field will tee off at Valderrama chaired by BMW PGA
Championship winner Simon Khan, who hails from England, all keen to conquer one of the most iconic venues in world golf.
The majestic course is a design of Robert Trent Jones Snr. The layout is known for few of the most thrilling tales in golf. For instance, in 1997, Colin Montgomerie earned the European Ryder Cup team the ½ point, which surged it into victory. Moreover, the
city has hosted the Volvo Masters 16 times and World Golf Championship twice.
While speaking to the press Keith Waters, Chief Operating Officer of The European Tour, exclaimed, “The European Tour’s partnerships with both Junta de Andalucía and Club de Golf Valderrama are among the strongest in golf, so to be able to further strengthen
our relationship gives us immense satisfaction.”
He further added that PGA was looking forward to visit Valderrama, which was one of the greatest locations for European golf. He also thanked the friends in Junta de Andalucía and the Ortiz Patino family in Valderrama for their commitment to The European
Tour.
Felipe Ortiz Patino is the President of Valderrama Golf Club and ever since, he took chairmanship of the course, the event has been organised there. Commenting on Waters’ remarks, he said that he and his team were obliged to have a strong partnership with
the European Tour and he too was looking forward to greet the tour players.
He further added, “Valderrama has a wealth of experience in hosting world-class events, having hosted The 1997 Ryder Cup, the World Golf Championships in 1999 and 2000, and 16 editions of the Volvo Masters. Furthermore, the superb quality of its golf course
has proven Valderrama to be the supreme championship venue in Continental Europe.”
The combination of these elements, together with the commitment of the Andalusian Government, guarantee a unique event which will not only be a worthy successor to those they have hosted in the past, but also the first of what they hope are many more tournaments
to come.
