Golf Update: Bushfire costs Hobe Sound Golf Club more than $250,000
The management of Hobe Sound Golf Club has suffered damages of approximately $250,000 owing to the Bushfire that lit the forest on Monday morning.
Manager of the Club, Michael Neary disclosed the amount of damage done to the facility because of the fire that broke on Monday. In a press conference held in Florida, Neary explained that the right section of tree line was destroyed. The area had expensive
plantation done in it, but fire engulfed it all. Four of the holes on back nine were affected, whereas the turf on the north side of the course was completely damaged. However, the clubhouse remained safe from fire as the fire did not reach the Far East corner
of the course where the clubhouse was located.
The statement was confirmed by Roy McDonald, who is superintendent Hobe Sound Golf Club. He said, “It's about 20,000 square feet of turf that was signed. It affected four holes, some palmetto trees and some of our irrigation control equipment."
Most of the golfers did not show up all three days. However, a little improvement was seen on Thursday morning. Members were seen playing on the East course as the rain swept the clouds of smoke away. On Tuesday evening, wind rolled a gush of fire on the
north course, while some golfers were still playing. Although no one got hurt, the fear did enough damage to the reputation of Hobe Sound.
Neary further explained that the management was certain about the members’ return to the club. He said that Bridge Road had been cleared by the forestry crew and was open for the public. Bridge Road was the main route to the golf course, but as it was blocked
for three days, it prevented traffic from reaching the club.
Division of Forestry has issued a warning for people who may have problems handling smoke. It has also said that people living nearby the club will be facing smokey conditions for at least a week.
