Golf Update: Chad Campbell also kicked out of Deutsche Bank Championship 2010 for not signing up
First, it was Jim Furyk and now it’s Chad Campbell who both got disqualified from the Deutsche Bank Championship 2010 after failing to register for the event.
The player who scored 1 over par during the first round of this Championship, that is being held at the TPC Boston, has now been given orders to march put off the field after he forgot to sign up for the event.
Ironically, he had practiced whole week before appearing in the first round which arises the question that were the officials sleeping when they saw him tee off without registering for the game or were they waiting to set some drama? Well, there should be some rule that states that if an official does not catch the player beforehand, he or she would be penalized as well.
Usually, an event official stands near the first tee and as soon as a player walks by, he reconfirms his registration and if the player has forgotten to do so, he is allowed to sign up at that very moment. However, in Chad’s case no official came forward for the registration reconfirmation.
Many people have commented on this issue including the tour's vice president of rules and competition, Mark Russell. He told the media that he was saddened by this incident but it was Chad Campbell’s fault, as he had failed to register on time. He quoted from the rules and said, “A player has to register for the tournament when he /she arrive on site. And if they don’t do it before the first competition round, then they are ineligible from competing in the tournament."
But he added that no one had noticed Chad's missing signatures until Friday night when Chad was called and told about the issue; on this, he accepted his fault and took the responsibility. Meanwhile, Jim Furyk has decided to raise his voice on the matter regarding his disqualification, saying that it was the official’s fault for not marking him on the registration sheet, as normally a rules’ official is always present at the first tee to make sure that all players fulfill the criteria. He added that he also felt bad for Chad.
As for Chad, he looks shocked over his disqualification and is unable to believe what had just happened to him as he was all set to become the next Phil Mickelson, who is his role model. Phil is currently second on the FedEx list and before him lays Ernie Ele with the highest points. Chad stands on the 89th spot but he was aiming for tournament’s top 5 finishes. Deutsche Bank Championship is the second part of the FedEx playoffs’ four session series. Tournaments such as these will decide the new FedEx points’ list and later the US Ryder cup team would also be selected accordingly.
It appears as if a trend has started for Chad Campbell, as last year also he was on his flight to Hawaii when he had found out that he never made the cut in the tournament. It was the Sony open for which Chad had packed his bags. Although, he managed to make the cut this year but forgot to register, therefore missing for the second time in two seasons on the PGA tour. From a laymen’s view, an event official should have been held responsible because a player, who is so desperate to get into the final Ryder cup team, already has enough pressure.
