Golf Update: Dave Eichelberger appears at the Sony Open 2011
After a break of 6 years, Dave Eichelberger might as well become the oldest golfer to achieve the cut at the PGA Tour this week.
The 67-year-old is most famous for his game at the 1999 US Senior Open that eventually sided with him and is appearing at the PGA Tour after a break of 6 years.
According to reports, the golfer achieved the status for the Tour after appearing at the PGA Aloha Section Stroke Play Championship. The golfer has a total of 4 victories from the PGA Tour and turned professional in the year 1966.
The golfer with 12 professional victories stepped into the Sony Open from the 10th of this month and will be playing till the 16th of January, 2011.
The Sony Open has welcomed a total of 144 golfers in Hawaii and aims at raising more than $ 10 million for the local non-profit organizations every January. The event is known as one of the leading charitable events ever and aids more than 100 organizations
locally.
As for Eichelberger, he earned the invitation after winning the previously mentioned event in the month of September, 2010. The golfer with a total of 6 Champion Tour victories played a superb final round at the Stroke play event to succeed the competition
and earned a place in the Tour stop for Honolulu.
So Hawaii seems lucky for the 67-year-old golfer.
Eichelberger, who was considered an ironman during his play at the PGA Tour as well as the Champions Tour, is considered as a second at the PGA, Champions and Nationwide Tour starts among golfers.
According to Ann Miller, the golfer moved to Hawaii approximately one year before his triumph at the USSO and since then, he hasn’t moved any place else.
With the 67-year-old now playing on the island of Oahu this week, he has a chance of becoming one of the oldest players on the fields to make the cut.
The previous record is in the hands of Ben Hogan which is now in threat due to the 7068 yard-size of the GC. With such a yardage of the Waialae working towards the golfer’s advantage, Eichelberger has full plans on breaking the record. The American has extensive
knowledge of the greens surrounding him and knows the tricks of the roughs and the greens.
The golfer held the same MC in the year 1999 but unfortunately missed the cut after scoring a total of 17 over the par of the two rounds. He has achieved the best result of a tied 8th place in the year 1983 out of 18 starts.
Other than Hogan holding the distinction, the oldest player to have ever played at the PGA Tour events was in the year 1994. The oldie is known as Jerry Barber who appeared at the Buick Invitational at the age of 77.
