Golf Update: Diamond Country Golf Club, venue for the Austrian Open 2010
Diamond golf course is located in Sports Club Fontana, where this season’s Austrian Open will take place tomorrow.
This is the 20th edition of the Austrian Open that is taking place here at the course. The event carries’ a purse of $1000000, although it is considered as the second division event on the Euro tour. Despite having this shabby tag, the Austrian Open will take place here on the course which is considered as one of the country's premier golf resort and is ranked among Europe's very best.
It will sound strange but the course is considered on the same footage as St Andrews and Valderrama elegant golf resort. The criterion on which it is rated and ranked is its modern day architecture and its beauty which gives a player a sudden rush. This is a beautifully -manicured Championship golf course located in beautiful countryside only few minutes away from Vienna.
As for the facilities of the course are concerned, it has a five-star clubhouse with a golfing school and practice facility especially designed for the amateur players. More over it has an up-market pro-shop which sells most of the game's top brands but at a premium price. Apart from the golfing facilities, there is a 14-court tennis complex here with Vienna's top restaurant’s, outlet, a sports bar, a Spa, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a steam bath, a relaxation room and a summer Swimming lake and a beach. What more can be expected out of a golf resort!
The official website of the Sports Club Fontana says that their key concern is to offer premium quality service to the guest and by any default; they are right as one visit with a stay at its vicinity narrates the authenticity of their claim.
Coming to the golf course, it is stretched on 75 hectares and carries par 71.However, the players won’t find it traditionally long, as there are 7066 yards off the back tees with three par fives, two of them on the back nine. There is a par problem here with the 15th hole as it carries the longest tee of 547-yards. Rest of the course has four par-threes, which vary in length from 158 to 206 yards.
Moving forward, grass is one of the main concerns on the course so here at Diamond Golf club three types of grass is used. Providence creeping bent, Penncross creeping bent and Penneagle bent. Then comes the hazard issue after all what is a golf course without a good challenge? Overall, there are 104 bunkers on the course out of which nine are Scottish-style sod-wall pot bunkers. Moreover, there are 17,000 trees at various places which have been planted over the time. As for the water hazards, there are approximately seven in the first nine holes and five in the other nine.
This is it for the hazards now a little description of the holes that need to be taken of;
Hole# 6
This hole is stretched on par 5 which means it is one of the longest holes of the course. Apart from its length, another issue with the hole is a water hazard and the uphill green. The approach to reach the greens is in two shots. The first shot should be aimed straight with a driver and the second shot should be delivered with a mid iron. As the shot has to be taken up hill, therefore a correct posture with, the right shoulder lowered and left elevated should be adopted. Another thing that needs to be addressed is the water hazard at the right, so make sure that the shot taken is with a certain angle inclined towards the centre.
Hole#15
This is a par three hole which means its major threat is not length. However, it carries the longest tee which means it takes speed, a fine swing and a wedge to clear the hole or else there is a sure bogey awaiting the player.
