Golf Update: European side passionate for the Ryder Cup 2010
European Ryder Cup team Captain, Colin Montgomerie is excited for the tournament to tee off. The Ryder Cup will tee off on October 1st at Celtic Manor in Wales. Montgomerie thinks that his team is definitely not short of passion and is planning
on having all twelve of his players play on the first day. This cup has gripped the world of golf, is highly anticipated by golf fans and the players of the sport alike.
Montgomerie is pretty confident that this time the team is determined to regain the Cup back from the Americans. Unfortunately, two years ago the Europeans surrendered the trophy at Valhalla. Some say it might have due to lack of enthusiasm in the team that
competed under the captaincy of Nick Faldo.
Monty, who has now been in eight Ryder cups, thinks that nothing of this sort will happen this time. Colin has been unbeaten in singles completion at the time he played in the Ryder cup. Unlike the previous captain, Colin has arranged a widespread backroom
staff and also devises to have a pre-contest meeting in order to be sure that the players are very stimulated.
Monty says that last time for some reason there was some passion lacking, but passion is something he can guarantee this time. Colin mentioned the assistance of his vice captains as a replacement for further inspiration. Thomas Bjorn, Paul McGinley, Darren
Clarke and Sergio Garcia will assist Captain Colin as vice captains during the cup.
"I will assemble everyone at Celtic Manor in the team room on Monday night and there will be so much passion in that team room that everyone will leave shaking. I can assure you everyone will go to bed that night thinking 'My God!"' Montgomerie
beamed.
Colin is also thinking of having Spanish veteran Jose Maria Olazabal on his staff. This is because the players still remember his motivating speech he delivered before the final-day singles in Kentucky two years ago.
Montgomerie is also looking for those in the team who exhibit leader like qualities. Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington are two players in Colin’s mind. Lee Westwood has played in six Ryder cups and Padraig Harrington has played in five. Looking at their
experience, one can say that they are likely candidates for future Ryder Cup captains.
Harrington was the final wild card pick of Colin Montgomerie for which he was criticized. Many though that player Paul Casey was a more deserving candidate for the Ryder Cup. Monty now says that one of the reasons he picked him was to make sure he can step
up his game well enough to be considered for captaincy.
Apart from exhibiting leadership qualities, Padraig is also determined to not let Captain Montgomerie down with his golfing skills. He says he will do all he can to repay all the faith shown in him. Even though he is a great player, people ruled his selection
undeserving since he hasn’t been in good form this year. He hasn’t had a tour victory since two years, but the Irish golfer thinks his experience is a very strong point and hence he will use his strengths. Harrington is currently in Paris competing in the
Vivendi Cup. This game will be his final one before he tees off at Ryder Cup. Prior to going to play in Valhalla in 2008, he had won the USPGA and the Open but still he wasn’t in his best form. The last time Padraig won a Ryder cup match was in 2004. This
time, Harrington, plans to be in his best shape and wants Ryder Cup to be the peak of his year.
With so much enthusiasm and determination from the players and captain, we can surely tell that the European team is pumped up. On the other hand, the Americans are not going to let go of the cup that easily either. This is what the Ryder spirit is all about
and the day it all begins is not very far.
