Golf Update: Furyk is disqualified for being late to the Pro-Am Session and Westwood is injured
Few days back, Dustin Johnson was given a penalty for grounding his clubs, now it is the world number six Jim Furyk, who has been kicked out of the Barclays for missing his tee timings.
Jim Furyk has been disqualified from the first part of the playoffs that are starting from tomorrow in the Ridgewood country club, New Jersey for showing up late at the pro-am. The tee timings for the player were 7:30 am but he over slept and earned himself a disqualification.
According to the US tour, the player who misses the Pro-Am is disqualified, although there are exceptions but those are in the case of family emergency or an injury. However, the case of the world number 6 was kind of different, as he overslept when his cell-phone battery died, and that's what he uses as an alarm with no backup. Now the Ryder Cup star has to wait to see how much damage he had done to himself after missing the four days tournament, which would have ultimately lead to the Deutsche bank championship in Boston.
Jim Furyk is currently standing at the 3rd spot of the playoff  ranking but the way competition is going between the players and the way changes are being witnesses in the list of the top 9 players , Furyk’s spot seems in trouble. Only two days back, Paul Casey was pushed out of the top 9, Miguel Angel Jimenez was moved to the top 9th and Peter Hanson took the 8th spot. These changes came after the Czech open that resulted in the victory of Peter Hanson, hence pushing him from the 15th place to the 8th. Hanson's place in the Ryder cup is not certain yet, as he is not taking part in the Johnnie Walker Championship that is due next week. However, Miguel Angel Jimenez is surely a part o f the event, which means that if the Spaniard falls in the top 14, Peter Hanson is for sure gone.
As for the expert’s opinion, Jim Furyk can fall to the 19th place of the Play off points but that wholly depends on the performance of the other players, which means Hanson definitely needs prayers.
If Jim Furyk would not have been disqualified, he was scheduled to play with the No.1 of the FedEx points Ernie Els and the No. 2 Steve Stricker in the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday.
Moving forward to the next story, Lee Westwood will not be seen in any playoff event as he is trying to recover for the upcoming Ryder Cup that is taking place at the Celtic Manor. According to the media reports, Westwood is suffering from a torn calf muscle, which resulted from the weight lifting session he had months back .It was the same problem that forced him to take a withdrawal from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the USPGA Championship.
Moreover, the European team captain Colin Montgomerie rang Lee Westwood on Wednesday to take a confirmation from him regarding his decision of not taking part in the playoffs before the Ryder cup. However, Lee told him that he will certainly be seen at the foursomes and the four balls which is a physical test that is taken prior to the big event to check the fitness of the player.
As for Colin Montgomerie, he is stuck in turmoil as he doesn’t know what he is going to do as his best players are either standing outside the point list or they are physically unfit. Despite the bizarre situation, Colin is stead fast as he knows that the captain on the other side is facing similar problems.
To wrap it up, Jim Furyk is out o f the Barclays for being late at the Pro-Am session, "I woke up at 7:23 and tore out of there, put a pair of pants on and shirt. I have no belt or socks and my shoes aren't tied yet," Furyk explained. "I actually got to the locker room at 7:35 and I had to be on the tee. There was no way to get there."
When he saw White, Furyk asked, "Disqualified?"
"Yes, I'm sorry," White said.
Lee Westwood is not taking part in the playoffs, as he has trouble with the torn calf muscle but hopefully he will be back for hitting the ball at the Celtic Manor.
